Why would you want to turn your volume down??????
Have you at least tried the Vertex improved version???
Felt like it was sucking tone out of my foot
Is it the Duchess of York mod?
Wehay! I'll set 'em up, you knock 'em out the park :)

Tubescreamer - it blends a driven signal with the clean signal? Urgh.
A Tube Screamer doesn't, but the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive is exactly that. Absolutely foul.

I had one of those Russian Big Muffs that came in a wooden box. I didn't get it.

Funny that - they usually put out quite readily for a few dollars...

I've made quite a few Russian Muff clones for friends, mostly the green V7C version, and the majority of these have been for bass players. I can't say I'm a fan of the GRBM on guitar.
That said, one of my mates had a combo of a Fuzz factory and Red Army Overdrive (the first of the Russian Muffs) and he made it sound ace with his Telecaster and Fender amp. A real Marshall-like crunch. I was quite taken aback when he told me what was making the sound!
One thing I will say: don't write off all Big Muffs just because you don't like the one version you tried. The various versions sound quite different. I like the Triangle and Ram's Head/Violet best so far.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

If it's in a wooden box I'd say you're too late.

    - Tubescreamer and all derivatives thereof

    - King of Tone (apparently it needs VOLUME). Not awful just didn't live up to the hype

    - Liquid Sunshine - I bought it  based on the rave reviews from this place. Now nobody talks about it...

    Every compressor ever.

As for the Big Muff, it's an excellent pedal for a very specific set of circumstances.
If you're running a small amp clean, forget it.  Move on.
If you've got a big valve amp (preferably non master volume) running at absolute full throttle, then the Muff really comes into its own. That's where the magic happens.

A lot of those already mentioned...DS1, Rat, tubescreamer...but also Suhr Riot. Cost loads and I found it almost digital sounding.

That's what it's meant to do :). You can get some brilliant sounds when it's just on the edge of that so you can trigger it with the guitar, but stops when you mute the strings. Not for everyone though, I know… and I admit I've sold mine now, it's too much of a one-trick pony.
