Stihl user here. Reliable but a bastid to start. Get all the safety gear and go on a course.

Oh and always wear face protection and a helmet and don't cut with your body over the line of the blade, when you experience a bit of kick back at full revs you'll know why, but I think they're generally safer than circular saws.
    This.

I'm far more wary of my router and circular saw than a chainsaw.

kinell, seems more trouble than its worth!! Maybe I'll make do with my bowsaw, and get a big chuffing axe instead.

So, what about axes then!? Long handle, short......etc etc

And really, your honour, its is for chopping wood, pruning trees.....and nothing else whatsoever!!

For splitting logs? A hammer and a wedge or log splitter with handle. For cutting logs a chainsaw imo. For branches a bow saw. G'wan g'wan yer know ye want to ;)

Stihl here too, but the hedge trimmer with the extension (will cut through stuff up to an inch thick).

I'm with Sporkers when it comes to chainsaws - get somebody else in.

I've a great pruning saw if something needs lopping.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Its for cutting up dead trees, and making fire wood (logs) really. So, I suppose an axe may do it in combination with a bowsaw. Not as if I will be doing a lot of it, but enough I suppose.

I will use most tools but a chainsaw is one I leave to the experts.

is not actually switched as no trimmings are evident and if it was switched on, then this would be nature's way of 'flushing the gene pool'....

My general opinion on chainsaws is that someone else should be operating them, and I should be many, many times the length of the blade away from them.

I agree absolutely @Sporky.  And as well as being far away from said machine, I prefer not to watch the performance either.

just been looking at these. V nice. Something earthy about them. I can see myself walking around hefting one of those, and generally doing nothing other than posturing and wafting it about. Perfect!

I've got a cheap chainsaw which has been fine for the last few years of felling trees and chopping logs. It's not as scary as you think, which then brings in the whole over-confidence being dangerous, so always treat it with respect.

A petrol one is good for cutting things at the far end of the garden, but I find it too heavy to use for safely pruning whilst up a tree so prefer the bow saw for the extra control is gives.

if just using it for chopping logs in the garage then an electric one is probably better as it's much easier to start and stop, and if you properly set up your cutting area then the chord won't be in danger. Electric one also stops you needing to store petrol, 2-stroke oil, and servicing of the engine.
Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman.

I used to have an electric one and it was shit compared to my petrol one.  The petrol one, even with a knackered chain, cuts about four times faster than the electric did when it was new.

Plus, the sound of an electric chainsaw is rubbish compared to THIS !!!!

    Axes: http://www.fiskars.co.uk/new-axes

X25 here. Some sort of funky ceramic metal head. Very light weight. Integral wedge in axe head to split rounds.

Beware- these are devastatingly sharp. Mine went through my safety boot and into my foot. Just a glancing blow but still sliced through the boot and drew (a lot) of blood.
