How long did it take to get that effect?
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Dont let HCl come into contact with any stainless steel though as it will ruin it.

I might have a go. Would be nice to have pole piece screw heads that are aged to match aged nickel covers.
I saw someone elsewhere talk about dipping the whole screw in the solution. That sounded a bit daft to me. You would not want to corrode the thread surely.

  • no no no... I had to age an Oilcity Scrapyard dog... get a cotton bud, dip it in the acid and touch it to the polepieces about 3 or 4 times and just let it dry.. perfection

exactly. and then take it out and let it air dry (should have some condensation in it which will turn into patina)
    And rust?

Good luck at your next gig when the tuners disintegrate and the crowd turns nasty - causing a riot - and YOU get blamed for the aftermath.

'Mail Exclusive: relicer who started 2014 riots did NOT take precautions'.

Never really thought about it before but assumed they would get large carboys delivered by road rather like gas containers etc etc.

    That's the usual method.

I find it surprising, it sounds like it's fairly strong stuff... And with a little knowledge, could be used to make something rather more dangerous.  I was expecting 0.1mol per litre or something, but this sounds miles stronger.

The strongest I've ever used is fuming, which is quite dramatic, but before that was about 16mol per litre.  That was still quite unpleasant to use, though.

I only mentioned it jokingly,my lab doesnt takr large road tanker deliveries but get ours through the post (packed to f*ck mind!)

    Sweat is very effective :).

I think gold plating generally goes on top of nickel.  you generally need to rub a bit of the gold off first then you use whatever you would use for the nickel.   gold plating is so thin is doesn't take much at all to rub through it... a bit of metal polish or some very fine abrasive will get you there in seconds

this is the method you need to use for chrome to get any ageing occurring.   Nickel can also be aged with circuit board etching solution (ferric chloride??), but that stuff won't touch chrome
I thought you used muriatic acid to etch circuit boards?
Muriatic acid is also derived from hydrochloric.

When I age my gold hardware, I...Er...

Play it everyday for a couple of weeks.  It ages in all the right places (revealing the nickel underneath) which you can then do your usual way :)

I think you can use muriatic acid to etch circuit boards, but if you go out looking for circuit board etchant its quite often ferric chloride you will find
