    Are they coated?
If not then a toothpaste slurry can be used to polish the scratch out- google it.
If they are coated then you are screwed- I buy my glasses from a place with a "free replacement lenses for scratches" policy.

Unlikely that you can do anything that won't make them even worse, from experience.

    That's the other problem.

They will want about £300 and two weeks to get new lenses

    Looks good.

I'm slightly screwed because I can't be without my glasses, but I might try them in future.

Fenwick's Windowize - might concievably work, it's very good on scratches on plastic/ acrylic surfaces. About £6 from big camping, caravaning type places.

Googling this seems to mostly bring up toothpaste or brasso. Seems important to have your glasses as clean as possible first otherwise you'll create more scratches.

I've been impressed by WD40 for small scratches on laminate flooring, not really sure that works for glasses though.

For God's sake don't use toothpaste. It was the standard fix for skipping CDs that left them cloudy as hell.

T-Cut works well for CDs and DVDs, for what it's worth. I doubt it's a hard enough cutting agent for glass though.

Most glasses aren't glass, they are plastic.

Don't they usually have a glass (supposedly scratch-resistant) coating? Mine do.

Asda do rimless glasses in any prescription (AFAIK) for £50 a pair, coated if you buy 2 (£70 otherwise)
    Normal frames start at £40
    includes tints

I bought a load of "spares" from them

the varifocals aren't anywhere near the quality of my fancy pricey Zeiss ones, but they are OK

I'd get down there and order some - as spares

you won't be able to fix scratches on a coated lens

there are re-glazers around, I had some reglazed reasonably cheaply by http://www.reglazemyglasses.com/pack-request.html
check out mse for other re-glazers

Cutting compound? Farecla make good stuff, failing that t-cut perhaps. I know a guy who sells posh vintage pens like Mont Blanc etc who uses it to remove scratches and to polish the plastic bits. I imagine it would remove any coating though.

I don't believe it is glass- I thought it was a different type of hardened plastic.
