That's quite shoddy treatment - why would you make a 120 mile round trip if there wasn't a problem with the pedal, and you'd discussed and agreed an exchange over the phone.

No. I have children and hopefully things to look forward to here on Earth over the next few decades.

This is what it will take to reach Mars with humans any time soon though. By far the most difficult part of a human exploration is getting back - probably more difficult than making a viable habitat there, at least if there's a possibility of re-supply every few years.

I reckon there would be volunteers even if the projected life expectancy on Mars was greater than a year or two.

Bear in mind that most of the *Earth* explorers from the 16th to the 19th centuries knew they had a pretty limited chance of coming back alive, and many of them didn't. The early colonists setting out for America and Australia assumed it was a one-way trip too.
