I can't belive no-one has mentioned U2's "Rattle and Hum". It should have won Oscars. Bongo and his chums on their hilarious musical journey across the USA. Numerous groundbreaking scenes, including the band watching a street busker and staring at Elvis Presley's grave in Gracelands. It brings a tear to my eye every time.

    A couple of good calls:

Almost Famous. Boy did I fancy Kate Hudson in that!

Yellow Submarine. Still love that film, the style of the animation is fantastic, brilliant characters as well with the Blue Meanies. As a kid I was mesmerised seeing the film, and especially keen on Glove.

The great British director John Boorman (Deliverence, Point Blank, Excalibur) started his career with Catch Us If You Can - a film 'starring' The Dave Clark Five. An enjoyable piece of swinging 60s, Chelsea booted, Hard Day's Night rip off. And why isn't Clark mentioned in the same drumming circles as Bonham and Grohl? Watch this film and find out.

there's a really good one I've seen called "Metalhead". It's Icelandic, and is about a girl whose brother (a metal fan) dies, and whilst sinking into depression/getting out of control, gets into metal, learns to play the guitar and so on. It's pretty bleak for the most part, but the ending is fantastic and it's actually a really, really good film. Highly recommended.

I bloody love 24 Hour Party People, one of my all time favourites.

Also loved Moonwalker - watched it loads of times as a child. Spinal Tap of course. Quadrophenia.

Then there's the Decline Of Western Civilization series from the 80s, but they're more documentaries I guess.

Rock Star. Fictionalised version of Tim Owens getting the Judas Priest job.

Damien Lewis, Timothy Spall on top form
Tim Spall, Dominic West and Jason Flemyng, plus small roles for Zakk Wylde and Nick Catanese from Black Label Society, Jason Bonham and a few other musicians. No Damien Lewis though.

Totally different, but equally good are John Carney's films - Once, Begin Again and Sing Street

Also worth watching the Wilco documentary "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", where what was shaping up to be a run-of-the-mill fan movie turned out to be in the right place at the right time to catch the band's principal songwriter and its "sonic architect" come to loggerheads, and the band's label dropping them over their "un-sellable" new album.

    +1 for a lot of those ^^^^^^^^

Amadeus is awesome - lengths musicians will go to driven by petty jealousy (Mozart & Salieri)

Sweet & Lowdown - Woody Allen's spoof on 2nd greatest jazz guitarist ever (faints every time he gets near to meeting Django Reinhardt)

Most of Quentin Tarantino's films have awesome soundtracks
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Backbeat - about Stuart Sutcliffe and the early Beatles.

"Nowhere Boy" makes for an interesting double bill- focuses on John's relationship with his mother during his teenage years, but has the Beatles firmly in the foreground of the background. Ends right about where "Backbeat" begins.

Help and Hard days night were influential to those of a certain age. The docu-drama style of Let it Be makes it interesting and enjoyable.
    Blues Bros is a classic

Finally, someone mentions one I've watched:  Hard Days Night in about 1975.  Thought it was rubbish.

Beware of Mr Baker - documentary about Ginger Baker.  I saw it at the London Film Festival and I remember a few people in the audience were bitching at the director about it... but I can't remember why.

Jimi: All Is By My Side - that rotten Hendrix biopic with Andre 3000.
