I know you will all be fascinated to learn that this was finally sorted today by a marvellous Oxfordshire farmer who, possibly against type, could not have been more helpful.

He patrolled the entirety of his fence in his Land Rover, found that a hedge-cutter had managed to sever it a good 200 yards away from my house and that the dangling live wire was shorting out full-time against another part of the fence.

He then phoned me and stayed on the line while I tested Tele into Lazy J and, hey presto, no click for the first time in weeks.
