For £300 you're into the territory of some real decent beginner stuff second hand. If you were looking for something more traditional then there'll be any number of Epiphone Les Pauls, Squier Strats and Teles (Classic Vibe series are very highly regarded) comfortably under that budget.

At that price you could also look to pick up something new in the various sales. I know these Yamaha Revstars have been well reviewed as solid, no-nonsense rock machines... https://www.coda-music.com/winter-sale/yamaha-revstar-rs420-fire-red.html

Can we take it that the lad prefers the PRS SE over the Fender style guitars? Does he need two pickups rather than one? Do they need to be humbuckers?

The reason I ask is that the PRS SE One is a single P90 guitar with no tone pot. It only really does one thing - that rude Blues Rock thang through a good quality, high gain, valve amplifier. Even with a Duncan Antiquity pickup fitted, the clean sound is uninspiring.

  • Yeah I think the 2 humbucker option is probably the best route to go down

That information helps. It narrows things down considerably.

From within the PRS SE range, there are various permutations of controls, offered in various positions. For many, one advantage of the Bernie is dual volume pots. Not everyone likes having the pickup selector switch on the upper bout. Fortunately, it is no great problem to drill an SE Singlecut or Standard for the third pot.

The "poverty model" version of the Yamaha Revstar would be equally good. A pre-owned example might fall within budget.

Coda has the Revstar RS320 in the sale for £199 which seems like a good deal. Richtone has a Squier Bullet Strat for £85 which could always be modded / upgraded later.

Any interest in a Blue Label Fret King Super 60 HB in sunburst?

Its basically a HSS strat. It’s a bit beat up and rough around the edges as it’s been my number one gigging guitar for some time now. However it plays as well as anything I’ve owned and has a great spec on it. Fully setup so really easy to play.

Let me me know if it’s of any interest and I’ll send some pics through.

For that budget I would go for an Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus 2nd hand.

Classic looks, decent build quality for the money, and genuine Gibson 57 humbuckers. Also come with a hard case if I'm not mistaken.

There's a few on eBay under that budget, but not sure where your based so dunno how practical it would be for you to collect.
