What was the most dismal, turgid and yawn inducing subject in secondary school ?

What's Hot
For me it was unquestionably History, sat through 2 years of it with my eyes closed and didnt even bother going in for the gce exam at the end in 1986

loved history, my favourite subject. Most boring subject was probably something like maths. I've never been mathematically (to my shame) so it made no sense to me to be there.

Geography .. couldn't wait to drop it at 13. Loved history - got an A at O-level. My teacher is now a well known author of historical novels. He was brilliant whereas my geography teacher could have become a millionaire by creating audio books for insomniacs.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

yeah, geography was pretty dull, but the teacher was also the girls PE teacher and she used to wear really tight track pants in the class room. These things are kind of important to a teenage boy.

All subjects should be interesting, it's down to the teachers.

    My geography teacher was catatonic.

Everything. Left as soon as I was 16.

Scripture - the comparative lives of Elisha and Elijah. Dullest 2 yrs ever.  I was first finished in the O level exam. Another guy did the wrong paper and passed !

I'd have been fine with Civics, Morals, Religious Studies, Comparative Religion, Philosophy

I loved History, and still find it fascinating.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

  • I liked all of it but I wish I'd been better at art. No amount of practice got me anywhere close to being even ok at it.

  • I'd have to say music, complete waste of time doing that even if you weren't having proper music lessons outside of school. All you do is prat about on keyboards making a racket.

RE as a non believer even then.
I disagree, with respect. I think even as a non religious person one can be aware and considerate of what other people think and believe in. I don't particularly believe in the "Britain is great" narrative that our school history curriculum is designed to impart to kids (they don't ever cover those times in history when we were utter terrorising bastards for example) but there was still some value in it.

+1. Miss Hagyard was atrociously dull. And that was her real name.

Amen to that.  Yet I can only recall one teacher who made his subject (English) genuinely exciting.

Interestingly I ended up in contact with the guy some 50 years on, he's a writer/actor now and I saw his name in the credits for a Radio 4 programme.

It turns out he never intended to be a teacher but having just graduated and stoney broke he fired off loads of begging letters to schools, one of which happened to be our local comprehensive and apparently our English teacher had just bolted so they were desperate for a quick replacement.  Steve hadn't even been to teacher training college, but his lessons were the only ones we looked forward to.

BTW if anyone has seen the film "Kes" the character played by Brian Glover was based on a combination of all three of our PE teachers, I'm sure of it.

Religious Education definitely. I'm still not sure what it was they were trying to achieve with the subject even now.
