It doesn't make it right, but I'd assume that's the reason they do it.
It seems a lot of the “bedroom” dealers feel a need to give a back story to reduce the price - in this case I think the OP would have been happy to discuss the offer with no other details and it’s that need to get one over on someone from these guys leaves a bad taste.
Aside from that, what I notice from the pictures is a missing chrome top from one of the knobs. Which sums up another problem with bedroom dealers - they don't add any value like a proper shop probably would. In an ideal world they'd change the strings, polish and maybe level the frets, clean the thing, check the setup, and address any obvious defects like the missing knob topper. That that's not been done tells me all I need to know about how much value this guy is adding to justify top end shop prices. None.
You obviously didn't get better offers so where happy to accept his money. He's hardly got it for a bargain n not going make a great deal on it tbh.
Some people just seem obsessed about what their guitars/amps r worth.
It's simple somethings worth what someone will pay when you come to sell it. If your not happy with the current market you don't sell its quite simple.
The current Market today is getting totally distorted by over priced gear that's listed n never sells.
