The skon/scone debate is tearing our country apart. We need a referendum or "People's Vote". The government can then go to the OED with a mandate for change.
Personally, I favour a compromise that should be acceptable to both sides.

If it's any crumb of comfort, the terms are set out in the Maltloaf Compromise.

With all this debate about the baked item, what about the palace with the same spelling?

Not a case of right or wrong  - just regional variation (like baf or barth). Just that for some reason the scone thing seems to have a snobbery element to it.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

D’you mean like garridge and gararge?

I thought that was always stated as a north/south thing...?

Not a North South thing.  More a rest of the country / posh South East thing.  I'm from Devon and we would never say gararge in the posh way.

Edit:  the scone (correct) vs scon thing does seem to be a regional thing though.

That's neither skon nor skone, but skoon.  I think.

    :-)
You're right. It's just one of many Scottish names that non-natives struggle with.

Wow, I'm really glad @ICBM resuscitated this thread.
Sorry . I saw that map and I had to .

If nothing else it shows that the Scoaners are a deviant minority, as I always guessed...
How did I miss this thread?  Well, the paint is now dry...
That map explains how I got the "cone" version when everyone else round here does the gone variant.  Me mum was from county Clare in the west of Ireland.  Definitely not posh.  Whereas the part-time imaginary gf, (a contender for the poshest bird ever) reckons, "Doesn't matter what they're bloody called, too many carbs, can't eat 'em, are you trying to kill me?"
