His music up to about 1971 (with a small mid-80s inclusion for the Carl Perkins telly thing) was magnificent. But having read his autobiography I coulnd't escape the conclusion that he was a whiny individual.

I had always assumed the lyrics were all high school "no one understands me" stuff

Another thing that's meant to be very influential from the same scene is the C86 compilation. I got it and it's total balls! So maybe I should stick to my instinct to avoid the Smiths

I guess now is not the time to state I’m a fan of Morrissey and the Smiths...

I like the music - I don’t care about the man. I swerve the songs I don’t like as I would with any artist.
