I don't think it matters which does the solo and which does the comping, as they are both tonally different enough for each part to stick out. On the occasions when I've used both with vocals, I've used the Strat for the comping because it's not so thick & middly and doesn't crowd the vocals part of the audio spectrum so much.

I'd go for a Fender, mostly because it's easier to make a Fender sound like a Gibson than the other way around.
