That was hilarious. When the bass player started his bit I thought it was one of those videos where they overdub with bad playing. It's even funnier when they're doing it on purpose.

Though my overwhelming thought all the way through was "Why?".

It's certainly a lot better than the video in the opening post.

It made my skin crawl more than the OP posting to be fair - some of the noises he makes aren’t right..

Don’t start - you’ll turn this into the Basschat thread where you’re the one who puts forward the notion that us mere plebeians just “don’t get it” as it’s “over our heads” and “beyond our intellect”

    Sorry.

For the record I thought it was rubbish, but still better than the GG one, so if it's over anyone's head it's over mine too. :)

The only thing I like about Smoke On The Water is the vocals, and they left them out.

What was incredible about the keyboard player?

Guthrie Govan has so missed a trick in not playing the flute...

My thoughts for what they are worth is that the only one “serving the song” as they say, was the drummer.
They don't want your name, they just want your number.

Well I'm gonna be a naysayer and not cos I think anything snooty like it's gone over anyone's head or anything. However I quite enjoyed it, except for that weird ass bass solo (what was he thinking), GG was sublime as ever for me. Makes me want to burn my gear though, bloke is an amazing player.

My head said brake, but my heart cried never.

I can’t begin to express how much I hated that.  So much self indulgence...  it made me quite angry.

I just don’t go for this kind of guitar at all but I’ve tried to keep an open mind and I’ve listened to this several times.  I really hate the bassist’s approach and I’m not much sold on the keyboards either.  However, I think everything Guthrie Govan is doing is pretty cool.  I know bugger all about him but he’s clearly technically gifted but he also puts “something extra” into this nonsense. I like all his parts - perhaps particularly the vocal parts.  He does it with humour, looks like he’s having fun and, dare I say it, in some of it he’s even putting in a hint of soul - I know this is against the general grain/perception.

@thebreeze I do agree, even though it was mainly horrible.

It's one of the problems of everything being recorded for posterity, including what was obviously an informal fun jam as a guest - he looks as uncomfortable as the rest of us during the bass solo.

A friend of mine in school in the 70s insisted that Jimi Hendrix was crap, it turned out in the end the only Hendrix he'd heard was that crappy bootleg of a pissed up Jim Morrison, Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix jamming in a New York nightclub.

These days it's even harder to control what gets out there.
