    While My Guitar Gently Weeps!   The only one where I was roaming around the studio when others were playing.  Excellent work from @vasselmeyer @sticker @richardhomer @Phil_aka_Pip @mrkb ;

    Shit, that was good.  Wow.

I have to keep reminding myself that this is a bunch of people who have never played together before, never practised together before, and - in most cases - never even met before.  Just turn up, meet, get into the studio, plug in and play.

    Wow.

Nah - it's just the camera angle.

At least, that's the excuse explanation I always give.

    Wow.
This was cobbled together in another room immediately prior to playing this. @vasselmeyer took us through the chord changes and we played it through a couple of times prior to this performance.

I liked this so much, I’m hoping to play and sing it at the Leicester jam. I have the chords and lyrics drafted out if anyone wants a copy.

Ah well, in that case, I completely retract my comment about it being unrehearsed and played by a bunch of complete strangers.  With all that prep, you should have been note perfect ...

    Oh, you pretty much were.

Seriously though, it's a repeated theme across all of these sessions that I've attended.  The capability of people who've really not played together before to just turn up and play their different parts in some reasonably not-simple songs continues to amaze me.

My reference point is the 12+ mths of "practice" every fortnight that it took me, a drummer and a bassist to get to a level of proficiency that we felt able to perform half a dozen simple songs in front of friends and neighbours.  Hours of practice - and we weren't as good as what's being played here.

And it's not because the players here are all hugely experienced at playing in a (different) band environment before turning up - because they're often not.

It's incredible to see - but even more incredible to experience.

I also think the mix of experience helps. I play in an originals band - I mostly play festivals and “events” type gigs.

At the jams I get to play with covers-experts with pub-hardened experience like @vasselmeyer and specialists in all sorts of styles of music.

For me - the mix brings with it a totally different dimension and the fusion of experience leads to some moments of pure magic on the day.

And us newbies get to wing it knowing the song won’t fall apart if we fluff it up - that’s a great learning environment!

You also get to learn how the nods, winks, gestures and flow works when playing so you can see how a band dynamic works - it’s a universal language

That is a great point for any potential jammers umming and erring about signing up...

If you screw up or forget yourself, you can literally stop playing for a few seconds, most of the time we have two guitarists and the absolute worst that can happen is we start again!

If we made it all about perfect performance, it would be sport not art, and not the same thing!

The prize at the end, actually walking away going "I did it" is a great feeling!

Plus my jam debut was REALLY dodgy, it's lost to the ether (I hope) but every time, you get a bit better!
You are the dreamer, and the dream...

Brilliant piece of camera work. I like the sweep around the room at the start to show who’s in the session. For a scratch band that’s a good solid performance.
