I’d travel down the east coast and stop off at -
    Berwick-upon-Tweed
    Newcastle
    Durham
    York
    Whitby
Then a bit inland to -
Lake District (maybe Windermere and Keswick)
If you want any details of what to visit in any of these places give me a shout :)

We went there on a school trip to see The Merchant of Venice when we were doing it for O Level.  Was very good.

Dude, whilst you are  in the Leicester/north-Northants area make sure you stop a while.

Though there are many more boring parts to these counties, it’s borderlands are a beautiful and a quintessentially English part of the country. Check out Rutland water for instance -particularly Normanton (I’m biased, got married there); drive out to the historic sites of Rockingham castle and explore the Welland valley towards Market Harborough and Naseby; drive across the counties towards Fotheringhay and pop into the towns of Oundle and Stamford afterwards.

It’s not rock’n’roll but it’s worth a visit, even if only once.

Oooh seeing a real Shakespeare play and Stratford Upon Avon does sound pretty awesome...
Oh it is. They sell out in advance, in my experience, so something you’d need to plan for but the RSC is a fantastic theatre experience.
And Stratford is a really nice town centre and there’s Shakespeare’s birthplace and grave, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Lovely park by the river but I’m not sure you’ll benefit from that in November!
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

Stamford is a good call.  DigitalScream might even be around to give you a tour of the pubs to avoid
    ;)
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

Right so this is what I'm thinking... what do you reckon?
Hope I wont regret not going further south to Cornwall...

    Edinburgh
Gretna Green (no plans - anybody been?)
    Yorkshire Dales
Manchester (Beatles show?) / Liverpool (Tate Gallery) / Chester (looks nice + near Frailers)
    Cotswolds
(Unsure whether to sneak Oxford in here)
Stratford Upon Avon -> MUST see an RSC show here.
    Leicester (theFretboard jam)
    Stamford
Lincoln and/or Peak District on way back.
    Harrogate
    Alnwick / Berwick-Upon-Tweed
    Edinburgh.

Not set in stone but I think that's decent. Lots of offers from folk to stop-off and stay over which is nice!
I think that's enough for about a week. Next time could do further South / to the East.

  • I agree that East of Leicester towards Stamford is very pretty. Then you got the fens which is bleak but worth a visit to be astonished by how flat it is. Don't necessarily stop there but cross it into Cambridge and then North Norfolk is really nice again, and the Norfolk Broads are beautiful. We had a two night break just south of Norwich and the area was tranquil and pretty with some fantastic food. You're never far from the east coast train line either.

  • If you go to Stratford upon Avon...

IIRC the tourist bus is hop-on hop-on at the Shakespeare houses,so you get a hassle-free guided tour and transport to/from the interesting places.

Leicester and east of it is my stomping ground. Stamford is just down the road. There’s some really beautiful places round there and not that many people visit as it’s not the usual tourist traps. Rutland is a gem

So I could visit Stamford then stay at yours. Sorted.
    lol
Btw is there much to do in Leicester itself?

I'm also thinking at start of September when I get time off work, I'm going to do a Scotland trip!
Skye, Cairngorns, Aviemore, Loch Ness, Fort WIlliam & Glencoe.
I've never been to these places...! September though...
