why would you get that wear all at the second fret?

    E
    A
    B7
    D/F#

    Pretty common chords those.
How come they have never played an F chord?

The nut might be a bit high :open_mouth:

I have a feeling they did - that wear looks similar to another guitar I've seen - the guitarist had long fingernails on the fretting hand which dug into the fretboard hence the placement of the wear relative to the string.

So 1st finger barre= no fingernail contact. Got it.

The blackened wear actually turned out to be finger gunk which was quickly removed by acetone. The guitar is all original with larger tone/vol pots. The machines are Gotoh. The finish is very thin almost nitro like.

I still think your daughter will be put right off by that...

It"s in pieces at the moment awaiting a deep clean and a set up. Not sure if the frets will take a recrown but I may as well try.

You can get Squier SE's  pack  strat from Gumtree for about 40-50 quid that with a decent set will play all day .Full size and sounds  half decent if you lower the ceramic pups .Add some good but cheapish   pickups and a Wilkingson  trem and its a keeper  for about 130  notes even less depending on pickups .
