    Felt longer.

    Much longer.

I thought it was weird.  There was definitely a fetishization of lonely woodshedding, with music reduced to a sterile display of technique.  I didn't get any sense of music as a shared and collaborative joy from it, which is what my favourite music films all inspire.  Its the film equivalent of the music you watch in YouTube brag videos, which does partner unsurprisingly well with psychological abuse and relentless suffering.
I think that sounds about right. To me the movie was about dangerous obsession (on both sides) far more than it was about music, despite all the music in it (obviously)
Correct, it's a film about obsession, the Jazz stuff is just the setting.

It's closest counterpart in recent times is Black Swan.

Like so many films before it that have a huge hidden subject but can't bring themselves to really deal with the issues or leave it to the viewers' imagination (eg The Big Sleep and homosexuality, drug abuse, prostitution and pornography) sometimes due to certificating (censorship), sometimes taste, sometimes studio rules (aka censorship) "Whiplash" was a wonderful study in deeply closeted homo-erotisism. Said nothing to me about Jazz, practise or Music though.

:-) I am looking forward to the debate when I recommend the latest Peter Rabbit film!

Black Swan was a comedy surely?

Had that on whilst making tea. Seemed interesting and fair and although I don’t know a lot of the detail he talks about his general take on it certainly echoes mine.
