Right, only had it two days. Currently playing through the WGS12q speaker in my 5E3 Deluxe I'm selling while I wait for a greenback and cheap cab (to tide me over until I can afford a Zilla) going via a Tone King Iron Man 2 Mini attenuator.

And it still sounds incredible. It's basically the sound I have been chasing for over a decade with various amps and pedals. Effortlessly and immediately. I found I'm playing it heavily attenuated and both vols up around half way and using the guitar control to get a ton of different tones out if it. It's really making me think I no longer need my overdrives.

I have a dual boost Bad Bob/Rangemaster build being made for me at the mo and a fuzz face and I think that will do it.

Only issue so far is needing to work out how to edit my settings on my reverb and delay pedal to compensate for going into a driven amp.

That's pretty much what I found. Quickly and easily able to get the drive sounds I'd been looking for in the bigger amps but with little effort and no pedals.

I need to get a cab for mine too, I'm interested to know what you're gonna do cab wise?.

Bought a greenback and one of the cheap Palmer 1x12" cabs off DV247 (faster delivery than thomann) and will eventually rehouse the greenback in a Zilla Compact 1x12" when/if I ever have money again.

Would have bought the expensive Marshall 1x12 on Paypal credit but the speaker is 16ohms and I need 8 for my attenuator.

I'll likely get a 2x12 for gigging and a 1x12 for home but not sure what to get ,

Zilla all the way if you can afford it. Or get the Marshall Origin 2x12" cab and replace the speakers.

I don't know if this helps now, but it's fine to run a 16-ohm speaker from an 8-ohm attenuator. The important match is between the amp and the attenuator, which it sees as the load - when the attenuator is set to less (quieter) than -3dB the speaker impedance is effectively hidden from the amp. You would only need to be careful at -3dB or if you switch to bypass.

I think they do a job (but they no Greenbacks) but the Origin cab has Celestion Seventy-80s in it. It's like £320 new though so a good deal for a cab that will go with the Origin.

That's awesome and pretty much how I felt the first time I heard mine. It's a beautiful sound isn't it. The sound that you dream of after listening to loads of classic records, and as you say, it's just there, effortlessly.

    Really pleased you're loving it!

I've just ordered the Studio Classic.

    The plan...

    EMG loaded Les Paul
    Boss SD-1 Waza Craft
    Boss CE-2 Chorus
    Amp

Terrible Zakk Wylde impressions on the way!
What cab? A Marshall 1912 loaded with an EV would be pretty close I would think... I used to have one like that, it sounded great.

(It also sounded great as an ultra-portable bass cab with a 150W head, but that's a different story!)
On @digitalscream ; suggestion - the Jet City 2x12 that has Eminence in it.

The cab is only £170 so it won't hurt too much if I decide to change the speakers in it.

I believe Mr Wylde uses 200W EV speakers in his Marshall cabs but I don't know the exact model.

If it's close enough, but also cleans up a bit that will do for me.

Still tempted by Celection G12-65 purely because they were on Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" - that's my favourite recorded distortion tone.
i have two of the EV speakers for sale as well in the classifieds

Absolutely. It's very touch sensitive too and cleans up nicely to a characterfull cleanish with guitar volume.

Greenback and Palmer 1x12 cab arrived. A fair bit louder now and sounds fab despite the cab itself being a cheapo.

  • Looking at the vids of the Classic, it seems pretty damn close to its big brother; does it have that, er, thump of a higher wattage Marshall through a decent cab?

Not sure about the Classic, but the Vintage definitely doesn’t. The basic tone is there but it doesn’t have either the dynamics or the bottom-end punch of a full-size 100W or even 50W one.

That’s not surprising - no small amp does in my experience. I’ve got a Mesa Rectoverb 25 here just now and that doesn’t sound like a Trem-o-verb either. That isn’t necessarily a flaw for a lot of people though.

  • Hmmm, as I feared. I used to have a DSL 50 (it never blew up) and I miss that thing on the green channel through my Marshall 4x12 or Orange 2x12.

My dormant Marshall GAS seems to have awoken....

As someone on the lookout for faithful repros/clones of early marshall amps the studio series provides a slightly more tempting and affordable route... I'm just wondering though how much of that dynamic sensitivity and feel would be sacrificed compared to the real thing? Edit: I see icbm has already answered that question! The 50/100 watters are the shit that's got the goo.

I had a 1984 JCM800 50 Watter and now have the mini JCM800 combo. I personally like the V type speaker. It's a dynamic amp (or hard to play as I sometimes think) but it sounds exactly like a marshall but less ice picky at low volumes than the original. It can be difficult to compare the two because I always played the original through a 4x12 (I preferred the 12 75 speakers). Nothing beats that blast from a massive cab.
Overall I like it and have no intention of tinkering with it.

This reviewer rates the Mini Jubilee 2525C ahead of the JCM and Plexi.
And funnily enough I have one coming up for sale soon.  :)
