Here's a good question - has anyone successfully cut down their guitars or deliberately stopped thinking about gear etc. And have it lead to more time practicing and learning?

It seems to be what we all want but I wonder if it's worked?
    Kind of.

I took one bass to every rehearsal for ages. Then decided it wasn’t thumpy enough for the music, so I put flats on it.

Then I listened to old recordings of the tunes, and noticed that everyone was using either a double bass or a Precision.

So I bought a Precision and was very impressed.

So I bought another one, just in case I want one with flats and one with roundwounds...

    It begins again!

Cory Wong only uses neck / mid

He also uses a cheapo am special strat.

I think we could all learn from that

I don't know who he is, but I see he has a blue Strat.

I've got a blue Strat, so I'm halfway there.

Let's say theoretically you've chosen to go down to one or two (sounds like some of you have), what would be your pickup choice/configuration (if electric)?
Three pickups - neck like a PAF, middle like a Strat, bridge like a hotter Tele/Rickenbacker. Switching to give neck+bridge.

As was demonstrated in gringopig’s blind test thread, guitars basically sound the same apart from the difference between two pickups and three.

I could actually do that with just my Strat copy if I fitted an extra switch, I’ve already got hotter bridge and neck pickups.
    what thread was that please?

I can only play one at a time.
In contrast, I own about 10 banjos.
Since you can only play one of those at a time too, I admire your public spiritedness in keeping the other nine.
They're investments for when the banjo makes its inevitable comeback.

If I win the Euromillions, I'm going to buy all the world's banjo factories, and close them down, and in parallel, buy every banjo that I see on ebay, and burn them all

It is the inbetweeny out of phasey Nile Rogers thing yeah.
Which is funny, since Nile almost always uses only the neck pickup...

The one which is at the front when you're holding the guitar normally, or even carrying it in its case.

I've been trying to help people pare down their guitar collections for years, but home security is getting too good,

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

Just one or two guitars? That's just crazy talk!

Seriously, I'd quite like to get rid of a couple of electrics. I've currently got five - not that many when compared to some here but certainly more than I actually need. My issue (and I'm certain I won't be the only one) is that two of them have sentimental value - a US Tele which Mrs9000 bought me for my 50th, and a G&L which I bought after my dad died. Neither of which I use very much these days and both of which would otherwise be moved on.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Worth modding them to make them more useful? I have an old Aria which I was really only keeping for sentimental reasons, until I changed the pickups as part of a daft project idea - instead of buying a new guitar for that - and it's now my favourite and most-played guitar.

Second hand, that can't be classed as cheapo can it?

I know a lot of retirement guys spends crazy amounts on trophy guitars but surely no one would be under the illusion they'd be limited in any way by not spending more than that?
