    Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield.

    Best debut album bar none.

Yes. Yes, it is. (Apart from 'Think About You' - that's bloody awful).

@soma1975 I thought Gezzer Butler wrote the lyrics for Black Sabbath

Ever seen the live version he did for TV back at the time?

Watched it a few weeks ago on Youtube, it's superb.

    + Black Sabbath,
all these were groundbreaking albums, new and innovative ,that started new genres within rock music and spawned many copyists , GnR being amongst them.
Great album as AfD is ,there’s nothing original about it ( cue there’s nothing original in rock anyway arguments) .
To me GnR were very similar to Aerosmith , couple of decent rock songs and some crappy ballads for the ladies!
Everyone’s gonna have a different opinion though and the beauty of music is that no ones wrong- if you like it ,you like it.
Apart from Kanye West ,,now he’s shit!

Early solo stuff was mostly written by Bob Daisley.

Interesting.  Either way supports him not being as good a lyricist as Axl then :)

I think GnR were punks in a hair metal era and at the time there was an authenticity about their seediness and sleaziness lacking in all their contemporaries.

I don't think Welcome to the Jungle or Mr Brownstowne sound like any other band.

Weirdly, their version of Mama Kin is what got me into Aerosmith.

The change in mindset and sound between AFD/Lies and Use your Illusion is staggering.

I think gnr (afd & lies) we’re far more of a link to the nirvana/grunge bands that followed and the departure point from the hair-metal bollocks at the time than they get credit for.

In a rock scene of over produced guitar/songs/neon, pyrotechnics, makeup and ‘spandex’ bullshit (Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue et al) they brought more of the purer classic rock sounds back, some rebellion, anger & power to the tracks and with it rawness & punk-type attitude. They, whilst still considered a part of the la rock scene, were a major evolution away from the cheese-metal that it had become. Did they open the door for the likes of Nirvana to go as big as they did with that?

The UYI albums are of course over produced and the direction of the band from 1990 has proven to be a disaster frankly but focusing on AFD alone, in my music-listening lifetime at least, it has to be the best debut rock album with Straight Outta Compton for non-rock.
