Do you solo with your neck or bridge pickup?

Kinda leaning specifically for blues-y type improvisation!

Also what guitar is it on?

I'm always going between the two whenever I have to solo, on Strat guitars I like the bluesy warm feel of a neck pickup but it lacks the cut of the bridge sometimes.

Neck unless I'm going high gain in which case I like the extra cut and balls of bridge. On a strat I use all positions at times though, middle pickup least though.

I only use a bridge pickup. I feel it cuts through better in a band mix and adds a lot more gain to the solo to help it sing. Except... on a Strat where I use the Neck/middle pickup setting. Otherwise it's way too trebly.

out of phase middle on a LP cuts through no problem imo

All positions are good just depends on what you're doing

Depends on several things but primarily how I feel at the time, what the particular tune requires and the way the room sounds. I often don't change pickups but roll my guitar volume up instead.

I pretty much never use neck pickups for anything apart from cleans or covering something that needs it, which I don’t really do much of either. Just don’t like the sound of it really, too smooth and boring.

  • Both. Often switching several times in one solo. In fact, I've got a couple of solos in one band where I have to switch in the middle of fast picking runs...sometimes, I wish I didn't make life quite so difficult for myself. I can't physically play those on any guitar other than my Jadens (with the odd switch position).

Gary Moore used to do that, switching pickups to emphasise a note

Depends on guitar and type of music. As a general guide, for warm blues and jazzy stuff, tends to be neck.  For classic rock, bridge, For funk, some types of blues, position 2 or 4 on a Strat or middle position on a LP or SG.  For country e.g. Tele or Strat, bridge or middle positions Inc 2 and 4 on Strat.  Bottleneck solos can be any pickup position, any guitar.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • I agree all can sound good...but usually it's neck for rhythm and bridge for lead.

Usually neck for me (regardless of which guitar I'm playing).
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Neck on a hum bucker guitar usually - bridge on my tele or in between

All my solos I play on the neck pick up.  Gives it a lovely smooth buttery lead tone as I belt out a monster face melter.  Flip back to the bridge for rhythm.

  • Both, depending on the song and what I need. I’m usually playing a Les Paul of some description.

  • depends. If its a fast solo its gonna be the neck pickup. Bridge pickup for slower grittier solos!

Neck on my ash body Tele for blues soloing, bridge for more rocky stuff.
Neck almost exclusively on my Strats ... though I don't use Strat that much these days.
Neck on my Les Paul for most of my soloing ... or both pickups on and blended.
Bridge or both pickups blended on my Gretsch 5420

Depends on the guitar and the song ...

I always intend to use the neck for soloing but sometimes when playing live things get confusing so i'll stick to the bridge to make things easier. I generally play Teles and use the bridge for everything apart from soloing.
