Why does a LP switch say Rhythm or Treble?

Because the neck pickup is *usually* best for rhythm and the bridge has more treble which makes solos pop. That's what I meant with my previous post

It was because they hadn't invented boost pedals yet so players relied on eq to cut through.

Now just stomp the boost pedal when it's shred o'clock

Don't agree that the neck pickup is usually best for rhythm at all, I'd actually say bridge is quite a lot more often the better choice for that.

Along with what @fastonebaz said, it's also like the finger rest on a P Bass being on the lower side of the strings - they were designed before decades of guitar paying determined how people would actually use the instruments.

  • Both. Depends on the solo.

The neck pickup is usually best for rhythm with a clean tone, and the bridge pickup is usually best for rhythm with dirt.

  • I try to avoid soloing with either pickup if at all possible.

Generally bridge pick up but on a Strat the neck pick up can be great for a different solo flavour.
    Don't touch that dial.

  • I guess the question was quite general, but more specifically I'm interested to hear what your choice would be for general blues type soloing!

  • Neck on my ash body Tele for blues soloing, bridge for more rocky stuff.
Neck almost exclusively on my Strats ... though I don't use Strat that much these days.
Neck on my Les Paul for most of my soloing ... or both pickups on and blended.
Bridge or both pickups blended on my Gretsch 5420

Depends on the guitar and the song ...

I just had a set of your Stonetones installed in my Strat and I have to say they're bloody magnificent! I love extra kick they give but also more importantly, retaining Stratty-like tone I wanted.

Makes no difference if you use a Hyper Fuzz.

My neck pickups are basically for decoration

  • I only have bridge pickups, but I have good tone controls and know how to use them.

  • Which ever sounds best in the context of the song. I have also chaged mid solo for effect.

I always think it can only be people for whom that's true who could ever want an SG.

    99% bridge now.
I was in a band where I used neck pickup 90% of the time and the rest was middle position.

It's just my opinion that the neck pickup on an sg or 24 feet guitar doesn't have enough of the attributes I switch to neck pickup for - not deep enough or smooth/fluid enough.

To me actually, a Strat bridge pickup and LP bridge pickup (for example) sound a lot more alike than a SG neck pickup and a LP neck pickup.

I find the positioning affects the sound much more than most other things.

Not saying the SG neck is completely redundant, just less pronounced.
