The Marianne Faithfull version is better known, but this is the first... although written by Shel Silverstein, not the band. The best thing they ever did.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

alwqys loved original version of Albert Lee’s Country Boy With Heads Hands and Feet featuring Chas Hodges from Chas and Dave . Love the drumming. Very Jerry Reed inspired guitar for the time.

  • Not sure how many know JD Souther but wrote with various members of the Eagles and partially credited for the formation of them by recommending each member to his girlfriend Linda Ronstadt.

Written by Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys this is the original recording. Almost certainly known here as a Barry Manilow choon or at a pinch by the David Cassidy version. Possibly ironic to be known for it’s cover version given the title, although the song originally had a religious meaning ( that God has given us all creativity).

Queen, "Stone Cold Crazy," sneaky "first metal song" candidate?  Later covered by Metallica.

The Searchers is the only version of Needles and Pins I've heard. It's not a forgotten original for me!

Funny, I never knew the Ramones' version was a cover until about a year ago.

Well, never mind The Ramones or The Searchers, the real forgotten original is by Jackie DeShannon from 1963:

@RandallFlagg I'm surprised you don't remember the Smokie version, it was a reasonably big hit in 1977.

So there's a difference between "forgotten originals" and "originals I never heard before due to circumstances of birth."

Whichever it is, there's also Dusty Springfield's "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself," covered later by The White Stripes.

And The Black Keys' entire Chulahoma album, covering a bunch of long lost Junior Kimbrough stuff.
