Err, Thin Lizzy - the classic lineup consisted of two Irishmen, an American guitarist and a Scottish guitarist.  They started out as three Irishmen.  At the end of their time, they had members from everywhere but Lizzy cannot ever be called a British Band.  And at their peak, they were top notch...

    Are you sure?

Lynott was born in Hallam Hospital in West Bromwich, England, and christened at St Edward's Church, Selly Park, Birmingham. His mother, Philomena Lynott, was born in Dublin and his father, Cecil Parris, was from Georgetown, British Guiana.

    Same place as me :)

As my attempt to claim AC/DC as British was shot down (in flames) - effectively because they're an Australian-based band - then I think there could be an argument that Thin Lizzy were a British-based band (although not in their early days).

We've sort of drifted away from the original idea of this thread, haven't we?

Was that intended to be a response to whether you would kick Girls Aloud out of bed for farting? If so, same answer here...

    Mr Mister

Rhyming and/or repetition is definitely the hallmark of a great British band.  Can we add Bow Wow Wow and Sigue Sigue Sputnik?

(I think Mr Mister are American though)

Just an observation.  Nobody's mentioned Peter Frampton yet that I've noticed.  I'm not saying he should be on the list, but he seems more popular in the States than in the UK, particularly given the nearly ubiquitous presence of his English peers of that same era on the lists being offered, e.g. Zep, Beatles, Stones, Floyd, etc.  Maybe his music hasn't aged as well as theirs?

Also, ten years ago I wouldn't have considered The Who, but now they'd definitely be on my top 10.  I fucking love their energy.

Apologies if someone has already made the point and I missed it but a similar and possibly better case could be made that the Jimi Hendrix Experience was a British band. Definitely based here and 2/3 British.

Yeah, they are mentioned somewhere in the thread.  You could say that Hendrix was very much the main man in that band and he was undoubtedly American, but on the other hand, would he have had anything like the same career if he hadn't come to London in 1966?  I guess I do think of the Experience as a British band.
