There's a blob in my binding!

Bought this new, not B stock/seconds, doesn't affect the playability in any way, but on the other hand it doesn't make me think "I've got a good one here" either - looks like flow lines!

It's at the 15th fret so stares at me to remind me it's there... now that I've seen it, I start to look along the binding, double fret markers at the 12 - if the binding were a stave, one would be a "B", the other a "C".

It bothers me more than it probably should, that's the downside of buying online I guess (or maybe I'm just being a bit of a fany!).

Would it bother you enough to send back, or would you just put up with it?

Can you feel it at all?

I mean unless a more knowledgable person can chime in and explain if it will get worse then I guess its a pretty minor flaw if the rest of the guitar is perfect.

What guitar is it by the way?

But also, if its gonna bug ya, may as well send back as it will probably continue to bug you.
Depends whether you can get a replacement that plays as well (presuming this one does) and is free from any defects too I guess
The only easy day, was yesterday...

Do you like how it sounds and plays?
Are the only 2 questions I'd be asking myself.

Can't feel anything, seems to be purely cosmetic. It's an Eastman T386.

Do I like how it sounds and plays? Yes I do, but a cosmetic flaw in such an obvious spot doesn't really match the Eastman reputation for the quality of their instruments.

Will it still bother you in 6-12 months? Would you have to mention it if you sell it and adjust your asking price accordingly?

Is it just a bump in the pattern, or an actual bump you can feel? (Ah, you answered that)

If its just in the pattern its incredibly minor, they actually do a fullly rippled version of the same style ivoroid binding.

Only you can say if it bothers you. I'd have to have it in my hands to know if it bothered me.

  • It just looks like grained ivoroid to me, nothing to worry about at all.

I think sometimes we spend too much time looking for issues.

Nothing will ever be 100% perfect no matter what you pay.

Would you rather one without that issue that played slightly worse.

You're probably right, though I'd have rather had the blob on the underside of the fretboard or someplace else where it's not continuously giving me the evil eye :-)

I completely understand I’ve had guitars which have had small flaws that just constantly bugged me to the point I traded them.

Nowadays I just ignore stuff so long as it’s not serious.

Just another high end Gibson feature they've managed to incorporate at a bargain price...

Can’t really tell from that photo. However if it’s bugging you now it probably still will be in 6 months,

The finish on mine isn’t perfect, though it is the worn varnish finish, but it’s definitely a great guitar.

I would prefer it with the flaw, it adds character to it. I have a 59 True Historic LP with a little bit of paint or something in the binding. It tells me it’s mine, it’s part of it and I prefer it that way.
If I had your guitar, I’d genuinely like it better with that little difference in it.

  • Buy another one... decide which one plays best; return the other one. Simple!*

@Coldfingers I have a feeling you might get to the point of it being too late to return and really regret not returning it.

I don't think I've ever had something like that that annoyed me at first but then I eventually got over it so I would return it while I could as I'd suspect it always would annoy me.
