I've been listening to some Journey (Escape, Frontiers and Captured), which made me think of the album Neal Schon did with Sammy Hagar and HSAS (Hagar, Schon, Aaronson, Shrieve) - Through The Fire.  It holds up pretty well I think.

Was listening to Cery Matthews Radio 6 Music show earlier & she played a live performance from Arooj Aftab called "Mohabbat".
Absolutely great, a real slow burn with a guitar part very reminiscent of Zep's 'Going to California"

I really like Cerys's Friday Night show on Radio 4, Add To Playlist.  She, her co-presenter, and a couple of guests, usually with serious musical credentials discuss 5 pieces of music that they've managed to link in some way.  Covers every style of music - pop, r'n'b, blues, rap, film music, classical, jazz, blues, world, opera etc.  The standard of discussion is very high. Warmly recommended if it sounds like your thing.  All past episodes are available as podcasts on Spotify.

I had a drummer friend over today.
It is incredibly interesting when you are listening with someone who is hearing totally differently to you.
All the records and CDs had notable drummers.
Dexter Gordon with Art Blakey "Gotham City" LP. He could tell Blakey was using Paiste cymbals! He was right too! "Listen that is his flat ride".....
Tony Williams "Joy Of Flying" - "he's overdubbed his signature licks" - I'd never realised that before but obvious when he pointed it out.
He dug Louis Bellson on "Basie Jam" and New Orleans 2nd line specialist Johnny Vidacovich on Mose Allison's "Big Brother" ("My Backyard" - a great Mose record).  Al DiMeola's "Egyptian Danza" not so much though he recognized Steve Gadd instantly.

But what really pinned his ears back were the Hellvig Mollestad trio and Snarky Puppy, neither of which he was previously aware of.

Now - "Dear John C" - Elvin Jones.  1965, fantastic.  "Time Is Of The Essence" - Michael Brecker, 1999.

I'm working through the back-catalogue of one of the forum's favourite bands.... Styx .

    Hello?

    Anyone there....?

One of those bands where I could name all the members and most of the albums, but I've only really heard a handful of their better-known songs.

And the albums are... weird.  The band always had two or three lead singers and principal songwriters, all pulling in different directions.  Rock, pop, some not-very-proggy prog, some campy quirky theatrical stuff vaguely reminiscent of Queen.  It's alright.

Currently reading 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' by Michael Azerrad, on 80's US underground bands (very highly recommended). So been listening to a lot of Black Flag, Minutemen and Mission of Burma. Learning about the bands helps a lot with getting into and appreciating their music.

Volbeat   - Caught some of their set from Download which I thought was great. Have been listening to their back catalogue and whilst they have some great tracks ,they are a bit hit and miss. Worth a listen though if you want some metal that's easy on the ears.

Predictably I've started listening to Khruangbin after Rhett Shull started banging on about them.

    Also Bert Jansch's Jack Orion.

    Fergus McCreadie - Forest Floor

I never thought I'd be one for contemporary jazz but I really like this album. His piano skills are off the scale (from the perspective of a guitarist who knows nothing about playing the piano).
