Rock bands doing Country.

What's Hot
Due to recent discussions with listeners over some rock bands playing better country than the current country artists I am aiming to do a show highlighting this.
Featuring bands like ZZ Top, Gin Blossoms, Rolling Stones etc.
Any thoughts on a rock band doing a Country song, not just a cover but original.
cheers

Bon Jovi's Lost Highway album is considered countryish by some.  I hear flavours here and there, but I think that view was taken mainly because it was a turning point away from power chord anthems for them.

Might be worth a look though.

I'd say they are already considered a country rock band though (or the very similar genre of southern rock), rather than a traditional 'rock' band doing country better than current country artists, which is the OP's remit?

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

There’s an old ZZ Top song She’s a Heartbreaker, maybe some other ones. Some of Elvis Costello’s songs - obviously he did an album of country covers but some others like Country Darkness.

I could so you a playlist of reggae covers of country songs and country versions of reggae songs ( might not be a 50:50 balance!). I’d enjoy it anyway.

  • Thanks for replies, ZZ Top song is from Tejas which is in the list, very country with harmonies and fiddles.
Blackberry Smoke did an EP a while back which I already played on my show.
    Will check out rest. Cheers.
Huey Lewis done a very country track on latest album.

There's also the track Nine Lives from Def Leppard's Songs From the Sparkle Lounge album that features a small cameo from Tim McGraw.  It's countryish in parts, but may be stretching the definition a little.

  • Check out Dan Baird's two solo albums after he left the Georgia Satellites, "Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired" and "Buffalo Nickel". Particularly the songs "Li'l bit" and "Julie and Lucky" althought there are country licks in quite a few of the songs.

Ahh, I usually include Love Songs in my favourite albums so I should have thought of that. Although I tend to think of it as country rock, part of that canon anyway.

it’s a bit middle of the road probably, I think I’m missing something obvious as well but as no one else will ever listen to it probably moot points...

Those two Quireboys songs mentioned earlier are far removed from my understanding of Country music.  Whenever the lockdown ends, I will try to get one of their albums but, live, I would feel very much short changed if the bands' onstage performance was as depicted on those two short videos.
