Best natural, transparent, edge of break up pedal?

I'm looking for a dynamic pedal to put in front of my clean amp so that when I strum softly, it's clean, and when I strum hard, it's slightly dirty.

I don't want it to add any character or change the EQ. Just sound really natural and like the amp cranked more.

Here's the list to consider. Any others? Not Timmy as I've had him before. Cheers!

Lightspeed
Subdecay Liquid Sunshine Mk III
Peacekeeper
Wampler Euphoria
Waza Blues Driver
Barber gain changer
JHS Morning Glory
TC Spark
RC booster

Reading what you wanted, I immediately thought of a Kingsley Page.

The TC Spark does exactly what you've described, plus a whole lot more if needed. Got one available for sale at the mo, let me know if interested.

Without really making a conscious decision to do so I’ve pretty much been using a JHS Calhoun (Twin Twelve) exclusively. To my ears it does what you describe very well.

The Dane would give you near enough the Peacekeeper and a boost.

    Tc spark or timmy

But an ODR-1 sounds better. IMO "Natural" should not resemble your clean tone.

I love the benson preamp, it's virtually always on now.

The Caline Blue sky does exactly that for me, apparently a timmy type, but it really isnt.

I use a TC spark mini in my fx loop and in that position it only adds volume,  heaps of it,  and no extra grit. Perfect for my needs.

For some it might add grit in front of the clean amp but when I tried it briefly it didn't seem to.

Have you tried a Tim V3? Timmy is good, Tim V3 is better.

  • A Fulldrive 2 on the flat mids setting is good for this

Had most of those. Peacekeeper or Lightspeed for me. The RC Booster is great but will be too clean.

But I also think a Page is what you want if budget allows

I used to use an EHX Soul Food for this sort of thing. I currently use a Caline Blue Sky for this exact reason.  Either way, you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune for what you have described.

  • I don't think you need other options, but seeings as you asked, the BJFE Flame Top is also great for this.

  • Greer amps Lightspeed and zvex box of rock give the most natural break up for my set up. But obviously it depends on the gear you’re using.
I’ve just uploaded a demo in the amps section comparing two different valve amps, but also comparing attenuated cranked valve amp to a clean valve amp using pedals for drive.
The ODR1 is a bit darker and the Caline pure sky just felt a bit soulless to me.

If its a Fender type amp, the Mad Professor Sweet Honey is lovely (or, more accurately from my experience, the Joyo Sweet Baby which is a clone)
