Ralph McTell, a fabulous back catalogue, great lyricist and songwriter, and a very good blues player which you wouldn’t really know unless you’d seen him

which in will be in 2 weeks time in London.

then in Jan I get to see Tommy E and Molly Tuttle together so that should hopefully be impressive.

and Bert Jansch, who influenced many people including Johnny Marr, with the new things he brought to acoustic playing.

Many others too, tbh. So many great acoustic players out there. I tend to gravitate towards acoustic players whose songs I like, rather than just for virtuoso skills.

Went to a Martin Simpson weekend workshop a few years ago and learnt a shit ton of stuff about open tunings that have helped my understanding of them immensely. His mastery of both folk and blues draws me to his playing.

In a total about turn from what I’d normally say about percussive playing there is something about the playing of a social media star Alexandr Misko (sp?) that draws me in. His most well known arrangement is of careless whisper. Genuinely think he’s awesome.

The late Eric Roche - saw him a couple of times years ago.
    Tommy E - brilliant show.

I'd like to throw Rodrigo y Gabriela into the mix, they do a great rendition of the old Dave Brubeck 'Just Take 5' let alone Metallica  stuff etc on YouTube.

  • I love the way Bill Frisell plays acoustic. Julian Lage is also great. Clive Caroll, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Richard Thompson.

Billy Strings. His stuff with Don Julin is superb.

John Renbourn - I do love Bert Jansch but I always found John's stuff more interesting.

Norman Blake, the US flatpicker, not the one from Teenage Fanclub (although weirdly, they are one of my favourite bands).

I'd also like to add John McLaughlin in the original, acoustic lineup of Shakti. Absolutely staggering playing that was on another level to almost anyone else at the time. Maybe I'm just an old (and bald) hippy but the mixture of those drone string chords and the blistering runs is quite spiritual, which I suppose was the intention.

  • Mike Dawes ... ever since he did this:

^ Mike Dawes is an an amazing player, always good value. I'm not sure that his stuff really counts as "acoustic guitar" though, there is an awful lot of electronics in there! But all good fun.

  • Well @Tannin if Mike Dawes doesn't pass the acceptance criteria then I'll say Fapy. Saw him live, up close and personal in 1980 and he blew my mind. Never seen anyone like him since ... closest thing I've ever experienced to seeing Django et Le Haute Club so that's good enough for me.

  • Baden Powell for me, as I've discovered him not so long ago. I find his playing captivating, in the way that it almost seems like he's not even trying, and yet it's hugely expressive like it has some huge emotional weight behind it.

I like a good song and the stones have got to be top of the heap.
Bob Dylan, obviously, and I like a bit of James Taylor. Fire and rain is a classic.

The human voice and the acoustic guitar go very well together.
