I can’t see any benefit that offsets the hassle of letting them in to fit them, and then have to rebuild and repaint the two cabinets in my house that house the meters.

Plus - at least to begin with - they were sending incompetent staff out to fit them. There were fires.

I have some snail previous.  Many years ago we visited Chedworth roman villa with our then young daughter.  It's close to where we live and we though it would make an interesting day out.

As we wandered around the gardens admiring the scattered remnants, I spotted an absolutely ENORMOUS snail.  I picked it up for a closer look and remembering how much damage the bastards caused in our garden, disdainfully chucked it back into the undergrowth.  There was a cracking noise and a closer inspection revealed a hitherto hidden piece of Roman stone with which the snail had unfortunately made contact.  Ooops.

As we continued our exploration, our daughter drew my attention to a sign which read something like this:

• Roman snails are protected by law (The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) from being killed, injured or taken (which includes handling).

• Avoid prosecution: it is a criminal offence to kill, injure or take the species (this includes handling).

• Prosecution can lead to fines of £5000 and/or a sentence of six months 

We left quickly.

I think the snails in the meter box are stalking me.

That certainly seems germane to the scenario. The little ones will be scouts. It may take a while for the full fighting force to arrive.

This has reminded me that I haven't checked my smart meter in months, so I plugged it in and all seems to be satisfactory in that I haven't gone over budget when looked at over the last six months (more times under than over and a lot more under than over).

As you might have guessed, having a smart meter has not made any difference to my usage as I haven't bothered to check it.

I'm hoping that prices are going to drop enough that when my current fix ends in October it's not too much of a shock.

As for snails, while I see a lot out on the paths and drive after a bit of rain I've never had them living in my meter box, despite the people who read the meter leaving the door open pretty much every time.

Think I remember seeing 'Pat Highsmith smuggles snails in her bra' on a toilet wall in a factory in the 1970's.

Or possibly not :-D   She was an amazing woman & a great writer.

I see AI is still adding digits to its images. Wonder what its problem is with fingers? Always either too many or bits missing.

Quite frankly having the snails take over would probably be a step up from most governments we seem to have around the world right now. If E-on wireless boxes attract them I say we club together, buy a job lot and ship them to the houses of parliament. There is a desperate need for intelligent life in that building and if our mollusca brethren can provide it then more power to their elbows (if they had them).
