    Elvis Costello - Alison-Shipbuilding

Xtc -Love on a farm boys wages-senses working overtime

    Lloyd Cole - Lost weekend

    Squeeze -Labelled with love-Tempted

    Stones -Beast of burden

The Band -Helpless - the night they drove old Dixie down

Hank Williams - I'm so lonesome I could cry

I'm going through an Elvis Costello period and Shipbuilding is just amazing, although the the Robert Wyatt cover possibly surpasses the original. My other favourite is Watching the Detectives.

I could of picked from any of the following , Good year for the roses-tramp the dirt down-new Amsterdam-indoor fireworks and been just as happy Eric, funny thing is, I hated him when I first heard him, I was only interested in Rush, Led Zep etc at the time.

I have to add one more to the list, Nat King Cole- when I fall in love, a totally undeniable Masterpiece to my mind.

  • Yes, almost the entirety of new wave passed me by as I was listening to blokes with long hair and tight trousers. I do love a bit of Nat King Cole as well. When I was younger my mother had a greatest hits that I would spin in between Saxon and Iron Maiden. A Sam Cooke compilation too - superb voice and some of those songs like Wonderful World perfectly crafted slices of pop.

Connor, I am glad that you have chosen the path of righteousness and four of those five I'm in full agreement with; but 'The Only One'? It's one of the few tunes on Chutzpah that I tend to skip....anyway, one man's meat etc, as someone's already said.
I love it - I think it's the best chorus on the album, and one of Ginger's best ever. It gets stuck in my head for hours at a time.

Mazel Tov Cocktail and You Took the Sunshine From New York are also up there. Great album. The fucker can't write bad songs, can he?

    Estranged by Guns n Roses.
Whenever I hear it (very often) it always makes me whine the band doesn't exist anymore.

I'd quite like to do some sort of theFB's all time top 20.

Like the John Peel Festive 50s.
Would be interesting, but would undoubtedly end up as predictable as the all-time Festive 50.

An annual one might be cool, to promote new music.

Definitely an upvote for Jo Jo Gunne @Philly_Q. 'Run Run Run; is a classic and their first album's is one of best southern-rock albums to come out of the US in the early 70s.

    @EricTheWeary

Elvis Costello's version of "End of the Rainbow" fits that description for me.  I like the original but Costello adds something special.  I hadn't heard it for years but seeing your comment reminded me.
