Need an inexpensive recording thing

What's Hot

I've got to do a demo over the next week or two.

The rhythm tracks will be done with the band in the studio out of my amp however for speed I'll probably do the lead overdubs in my own time at home on Reaper.

It occurs to me that I currently don't have anything to do that with as I recently sold both my Zoom G3 and my Boss GT-100.

So I need something inexpensive that can do a decent clean amp tone (I can use my pedal board for distortion) takes pedals and does USB recording.

It would also be a plus if it has a line in so I can use it for learning songs.

Excluded are: Boss, Zoom G3, Fender Mustang (hates pedals),

Possibilities are: Blackstar ID, Yamaha THR, POD HD (does it have USB recording?)

What should I get?

POD HD does have USB recording.  I have a few things laying around (a couple of Mboxes etc) you would be welcome to borrow but they're all Pro Tools related and I'm guessing you don't have time to fiddle with a completely different DAW?

You could get a cheaper end POD X3 or UX2 if it's only for recording - re-reading I'm taking it you need sounds as well an actual input device.

    Thanks fella.

I'd be snatching the odd hour with Reaper.

I'm not mixing the demo or anything I'd just be providing some stems.

Does the PODHD have a line in?

If you just want to borrow a Yam THR-10 for a week or two ...
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

Ooo actually that might be a good option for me.

If I like it I could buy one.

I'll have to think of an appropriate lend in return.

Yeah, it has both jack & XLR.

  • Do you have an idevice? Jamup is excellent for this sort of thing. You'd just need an iRig or Apogee whatnot.

I was just over there this morning too!

It's here not doing very much, so you're welcome to grab it whenever you're passing.

  • One good option is to find something with which you can record both the dry and amp tones - that way, you can re-amp with something decent when the opportunity presents itself.

That's how our whole album was recorded - tracks were recorded dry, and then reamped through my Eleven Rack.

I actually answered a similar question over at HR.

I have an ID Core 40 plugged USB into this Asus D'top and found it in Samplitude as a USB device.

Thus anything going on in the amp comes up in SAM SE8. I have no reason to think it would be different for any other DAW? If Windows sees the amp so should the recording software.

I too am willing to loan out the amp but not until after crimble and Son has had a bash on it.

If on the other hand you wanted a cheap AI the M-Audio/Alesis M track get a good rep.

    Dave.

That is a good option but you have to be check each device carefully before plumping for one.  The Eleven Rack does it easily whereas the Pod HD (without surrendering one channel) will only do it via AES.

    This.

If you've got an iPad/iPhone, and some sort of interface, you could do worse than to checkout JamUp Pro XT and Bias.

  • I use a pod studio, works alright. You'll be better with it than I am!

You can record dry and wet, too, very easily, and reamping is easy - just go from line out to amp input and tweak the knob to get it the right level.

The modern tube preamp model is really useful for simple tone shaping, as is the parametric eq. Not the most powerful things in the world, but definitely very useful.

    No I don't I'm afraid.

I have a Macbook Pro, but currently no usable audio interface as my laptop has no firewire.

I'm not really familiar with iRig.

I'm probably better off with something that exists outside of a PC as well for other purposes.

That would be good, but I don't currently have an audio interface as the one I've got is firewire and the laptop I'll be using doesn't have firewire.

    Dang bro.

Apparently, there *were* issues with the blackstar ID's and recording levels.  I don't know if this has been rectified, I can't find much info online.

So the THR is probably a really good bet :)

Should be able to pick up a Digitech RP500 or RP1000 pretty cheap. USB link up, Aux In (1/8" jack). Dead easy to use and sound good even though they're not the latest thing on the block.
