Lynden, I've tried a new GAS strategy this year, which may suit you also...

    One in - NONE out

  • (Actually, at one stage, it was 3 in, none out...)

    I had an 18/20
Construction and appearance excellent, and great customer service

Sadly, although doubtless way better than the small-wattage Marshalls, for sound I rated it as only "Good", not his fault, I believe the EL84 valves used simply can't match the bigger ones for this sound
I stuck with a Ceriatone JTM45 for a long time after that, fitted with a pair of KT66s. This sounded significantly better to me, and ironically cheaper.

I'd say get a JTM45, they aren't much louder with KT66s, probably 35w-40w compared with 20w, so can still be used in a room suitable for the 18/20

Cornell's JTM45 uses EL34s, which you may prefer, I don't know if he offers it with the KT66s
His one has a low-power mode too, and his low-power mode worked quite well as I recall

  • I had a 45/50 for a couple of years. Great build quality. I also had the matching 2/12 with heritage greenbacks. I - sonically - was rather underwhelmed, although it did sound good it never blew me away...i sold the head and kept the cab and in retrospect I think it was the cab making the amp sound a bit 'meh', cos it did it to every other amp I used it with! Pine open back cabs are not right for ballsy Marshall tones.

I recorded almost all of the guitar parts on one of my bands albums with it and listening back it sounds pretty good, even if not a standard rock tone. You can hear samples at www.modusnet.bandcamp.com or search for 'sounds from the kitten casino' on iTunes.

I'd have another now but if be looking to pair it with a closed back cab like a Marshall 2245 (I think!).

@thisisguitar - as discussed, I'd go big bottle too. You might be able to run kt66 with a click on the impedance switch

Cabs and speakers are very important. I've ran my 45 50 through my mjw 2x12 with fane AXA & Medusa speakers, and it sounds OK.. But run through the Dr Z Z-best with a V30 and Creamback it sounds awesome!!

  • Thanks guys, that's a lot of feedback :-)

@shaunm - I have the original one (there's a new one out). You'd want a pedal to go with it for sensible use at home I'd say, but it would likely make a great recording amp too. I find the 0.1w mode hardly ever gets used unless for teaching, and even then it's a tiny bit too quiet. It such an inspiring amp to play through though, and I have some pretty serious gear besides it… it's so good that I want to get the same sound on a bigger scale!

@Wazmeister - You are a terrible influence. However you are also right.

    @gjonesy - That could well happen :-)

@Pete24v - Thank you for that offer mate, very kind. I may well take you up on it when the new year comes around.

My 18/20 goes into a Two Rock cab with a Gold in it. Sounds huge

0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • @JohnPerry - I'm thinking of running two heads into one cab. I have the Two Rock 2x12 cab and the Studio Pro 50, so clean is covered. Finding tonal nirvana is a pain in the arse, lol

  • Mate, i tried the Tone King Royalist/Majesty at Coda and it was very very impressive, and sounded great at lower volumes too... Justa thought

Just been looking at the Marshall catalogue too. Some of the reissue stuff looks good.

Ive owned a Cornell 18w. To me, it sounded very, very aggressive; an out-and-out brute - even by Marshall standards. I currently own a Ceriatone 18w which is a certainly softer sounding. I really like them both and wouldn't like to say which is best. Largely because their was a 5 yr gap between owning them both.

I would also say that neither could really be directly compared to a JTM45. To me, these have a distinct voice of their own as well as significantly more clean headroom. And without doubt, one of the greatest Marshall amps.

  • I have a Plexi 7 that I don't use any more now that I have the Two Rock Jet. It's a great little amp and I have gigged with it quite a few times. It's pretty loud despite the small wattage!

I'd be open to selling it, possibly. Although I've had a bad experience buying on the forum so it would probably have to be a face to face deal rather than posting it.

  • Thanks for the input @matt1973

@bossarb - I'd need a bit more output than that, but thanks for the offer. How do you find the Two Rock Jet? Is it two channel?
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • Yes it is two channel. I've only had it a couple of weeks and gigged it twice. So far have just used the clean channel + pedals when playing live. Not sure about the gain channel yet - I need to play some more. There is a bypass switch too that bypasses the tone stack and sounds really alive and raw. I think I will be using that more. Hoping to get some time to play with it over Christmas.

It's just a Jet 22 but it is PLENTY loud enough for gigging, even standing next to the drummer and a very loud bassist.
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • I have a Studio Pro 50w, bypassing the tone stack is great fun :-) I do find I need that much power for the clean headroom when we play live though.
