Saw PG a few years back at what I believe was one of his last ever gigs. He just looked very vulnerable and like he didn't want to really be there. However, he did play an acoustic version of Albatross which was one of those hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck moments. Pitch-perfect bends and immaculate phrasing. Glad I saw that but TBH the rest of the gig was upsetting to watch.
I saw him after he had parted company with the Splinter Group. He seemed far more together and enjoying playing than I had ever seen him since his return to live work in the mid 90s. To be fair, I'd have liked to see him play more shows with this band. He looked to be far more in charge of the show than he ever did with the Splinter Group

Better than I remember them being at Donnington Monsters of Rock, but then there's no Vai to suffer through on this video,

Having just come back from Giants of Rock at Butlins, I can confidently say there's loads of fallen idols around. Standout one, if that's the word, was Mick Ralphs. Dear oh dear. He looks awful these days and was just playing hackneyed blues standards. If you saw him in a pub band you wouldn't think he was anyone special. :(

  • I saw PG just after his return, in a tiny venue in the borders (which was very weird). It was 2 hours of average blues rock and then towards the end these moments of pure genius. When he was 'there' it was really astounding.

    Very odd to watch.

I always thought he was looking good for his age, but a couple of years ago he suddenly turned into Michael Winner.

I saw him 3 times during that period (once opening for BB King). He did have lucid moments of perfection but they were few and far between. The main thing for me was his voice... shivers.

At the risk of derailing the thread, seeing that EVH clip reminded me of this.

Kelly Clarkson on Graham Norton tonight :(.

Oh dear… I love Kelly, but this is really painful.
