So, I'm finished the degree now.

I heard that my dissertation is in the top 50, as they want to publish it for the summer show and they only do that with the top 50.

Which means I received a 1st for that part at least.

Won't know the rest for a while, maybe 6 weeks.

The bit that always amazes me is that you have made these from solid bits of wood.....you don't find trees with telecaster shaped necks on them....I just can't get my head around the work and skill needed to transform a block of wood into something playable.

I am truly in awe of your work James.

Can only give 1 wow when it needs at least a 1000!!!

Thank you- I'm truly humbled by your praise.

In truth, nothing is super difficult and we have other students and staff to bounce ideas off.

I will miss that when I go out on my own, so much so that I've considered finding a workshop partner to share a space with, just to have that professional interaction.

I'm going to do it alone for a bit and see how it goes.

You just have to be methodical about it, which I guess I am.

It is a series of minor problems and each time you do it you get bit better.

For instance, what you cannot see in the photo is a few minor scratches where the neck its the body, on the rosewood sides.

They are there because I attached the neck before the final shaping was done.

I thought I'd get the neck on and then finish off the shaping.

I'll never to it again, because in the process of finally shaping the neck heel you cant avoid scratching the sides.

Then you have to work to get the scratches out of the sides, which scratches the neck, right where they join.

In future I'll make the necks 100% completely finished stylee, then attach the neck.

I'm massively out of sorts right now- don't know if I am coming or going.

The university workshop is closed and I have nothing I can do- I'm basically on holidays now until we move house in September and I can set up the workshop properly.

Exhibition day- I left early as there are WAAAAY too many people there and you can't hear what anyone is saying.

We had about 24 instruments on show.

That is the heaviest guitar known to man- we've dubbed it 'White Dwarf'.

The chap who made it took a piece of wood out of whether had at the uni- it was a piece of ash.

I reckon the guitar is at least 15lb.

The one on the far left has a body made from horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum).

I finished that last year.

It is ok, but the 000 is a much better build.

Best of luck with the move, the workshop setup, and the foray into the big bad world of business. I don't think I'm a good businessman, which is why I'm happy to be an employee again.
