Just started my first build , OK I know its yet another partscaster Tele type ,

and the board is awash with them ,but I`ve got to start somewhere.

Always wanted something like the Tele on the "Born to Run" cover.

Changed my mind a bit after I`d started , I`m going for an Esquire type now ,

but it may yet evolve . :)

Got some bits and pieces from Axecaster last week.

And a Honkey Tonk Angel from Oil City Pickups, ( fancied a T-shirt , but not at £30)

also scored a nice Ash Mighty Mite body and neck ,off a guy on ebay with the same idea , who never got around to it.

Mine now Sucka!

Started with the Tru Oil on the body yesterday morning , I`ll put some pics up tomorrow.

Tuners should arrive any day now . :)

    Best place to start, IMHO.

The body has had a about 7 or 8 coats of Tru Oil now , the basic electrics are done , the machines have arrived ,and I`m waiting on some screws and conductive paint.

    It`s definitely getting there.

I know I shouldn`t be giving out advice , as I haven`t finished my first build yet , but......NEVER use power tools for the screws , even if you are tired and impatient.

Stripped the head on a bridge screw last night , that was 90% of the way in , this screw was in tight and going nowhere , there was much loud swearing.

Smartest thing I did was walk away for half an hour , and have a cup of tea , resisting the urge to do something to make it worse.

Then , remembered an old trick , drilled a tiny hole in the centre of the head , allowing the screwdriver to sit a little deeper , and got the tiniest purchase on the bugger, hard work but 10 mins later it was out .

Got smart and called it a night. >:D<

    Getting there.

Electrics are done , finish is done , frets polished.

Didn`t want the finish too thick , like a coat of plastic ,

to show the beauty of my wood ....

    ..... (what?)

Waiting on a decal now , holding me up.  :-w

Looks lurvely - I'm another person who'd love a born to run style tele. There's something great about it just being a slab of oiled wood with strings - almost primeval!

    Nice!

How did you go about lining up the bridge for the screws? Both e strings on, or just line it up over the string holes with the pickup attached?
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • 10thumbs10thumbs Frets: 427

A bit of both really ,the pickup space was very tight , so there was only a tiny bit of play there , and I only  put two short screws in the neck to start with  ( just in case).

Then with two old tuners on the headstock , I used the the two E strings , and did a bit of bridge jiggling and marking, for the drill.

I`m sure there are better and more professional ways of doing it , but the finished result is good . :D

BTW - I made my own decal yesterday , completely forgetting that I have an inkjet printer .

Three seconds in the warm water today , and the ink was running everywhere ... D`oh ! :))

Did you overspray with a couple of coats of lacquer before wetting the decal?. First one i did had one coat and ran. Next one had a few light coats and worked much better. Although the ones that have, been made for me have been on another level

I've started just wetting the backing of the decal with a wet finger, I find it easier to manage and no worries with smudging.

    Looking really good.
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

    Doh !

TBH it was a spur of the moment ,and slightly half arsed attempt .

But after taking your advice I tried again and voila !. :-bd

I`ve already ordered a more ...AHEM !.."Traditional" ...logo , online, :-\"

so , I don`t know whether to redo this one a bit straighter and smaller , or just scrap it ,

I designed it myself, and I can`t decide if it looks a bit too "amateur" or not ? :-?

Anyway , electrics are done, vintage style locking machines are on, and all screws are now in.

Straplok buttons are in place , and the strings line up (phew).

    Almost there.  >:D<
