Calling all Lazy J20 owners

What's Hot
hotpickupshotpickups Frets: 1822
Have you ever A/Bd a Lazy J20 with a 30-40 watt amp? I maybe going down the rock band route again and thinking my J20 wouldn't be suitable. Personally I think it's plenty loud enough but haven't used it against another guitarist in a band. Was thinking of going traditional and thinking of a marshall type amp I.e. Head and cab

What you say Lazy J owners?

I can't imagine needing anything louder than my J20. How loud do you anticipate playing?!?

Loud enough to be able to compete with a second loud guitarist. More clean headroom might be needed I'm thinking

Mine holds its own easily against a Laney VC30 but then we aren't a particularly loud band.
Can't you tell everyone to turn the f*** down?

Of course, if you're just seeking sanction to go out and buy another amp then... everyone should have something Marshall'esq in their arsenal.

Lol not wanting to fork out anymore for amps particularly to be honest. Just thinking I might have to consider it :)

I found clean headroom to be a problem with the Lazy J in a band with another guitarist. I could either get the ideal rhythm volume or the ideal solo volume but not both (and that was with a pretty full featured pedal board with a number of boosts). In retrospect, I think it favours the guitarist who works the guitar controls quite a lot, and that isn't me. I loved the core sound of the lazy j, but it didn't work in practice for me.

As you know, the J20 isn't designed for clean headroom, the whole thing is about the chewy breakup.

I use mine either on its own or with a Bas Cat Black Cat (a LOUD 30w Matchless DC30 equivalent) and a Top Hat Emplexador (boutique 50w Marshall). If I am playing loud, which is rarer these days, the Lazy J20 can easily fart out and won't compete with the other two - especially the Black Cat which has notoriously good headroom. In these situations I generally leave the J20 at home and use the other two. Or I might take the J20, run it loud and blend it in with the 'main' amp as an extra texture. Works great.

That said, our loud gigs are LOUD and far exceed the 'normal' pub/club gig levels.

And obviously this whole conversation is irrelevant if you are miking up.

Yep I would just mic it up.

As an aside I turned my lj20 into a two channel amp yesterday by running an a/b box into it. Normal volume set low for cleans and bright volume higher for dirt with a cable into each input. Sounded great!

@hotpickups, I thought you were having a Tone King on long term loan? Surely that will be plenty?

Seems like you are in the same situation I was last year. Not really playing many band gigs and Gassing for something else every 5 minutes which 'might' improve the situation.

Trying to second guess what you might need before the situation happens is pointless. The other guitarist might only own a Pignose or something!

As a pal, my advice is be happy with what you've got, quit GAS-ing and start playing!

It'll be cheaper and more satisfying in the long run! :-)

You could try a badcat unleash 2 which will give you the same tone but more output assuming your speaker can take it.

    It's a strange one this, I guess...

For an amp with such limited controls, the LJ is surprisingly versatile, imho.

I havent gigged mine in anger yet, but I couldnt imagine it running out of headroom... When I visited Jesse' house and he serviced my J20, he did a quick run through the dials, and i was amazed at the versatilty.

Maybe it won't hold pure clean 'cleans', but it will be awesome sounding.

So, is the Tone King still around mate ?

@hotpickups, also if you ever want to compare your J20 to my J20h then just pop over, all it takes is a quick blast along the M4!

When all's said and done, just remember Nalle Colt has spent all summer supporting AC/DC in stadiums around the world with 2 x J20's... ;-)

@miserneil well the Tone King turned out to not be a long loan after all but 2 months max then he'll wants to sell and I'm not wanting to pay around £1700 for it to be honest. Especially with the knowledge that I'm not even in a band at the moment. You're right about the gassing whilst I'm not playing and gonna have to knuckle down and change that. I've bought kit before thinking il need it and then don't ;)

Thanks @majorscale that could be very useful and kind offer. Trouble is at this stage that'll start me gassing for a J20H then and I ain't git the money LOL.

I haven't tried it yet. I'm going down to Portsmouth where he lives next Saturday to try it out and bring it back with me. It's for a couple of months so not sure I'll bother as it's still a lot of money for an amp even though it's a great amp and build. Just got to weigh up what I really need.

This is a direct response I have for going into my 'Mind Palace' where it has all the possible scenarios of amps and pedals which fuels the gas. I'm gonna have to stop going there in the  future and concentrate on what's real ;)

    Yes, but...

    1. Nalle is the only guitarist
    2. He mics up
    3. He works his guitar volume control
    4. Angus doesn't play at the same time :)

    R.
