Recommend two songs each please

What's Hot
thebreezethebreeze Frets: 2804
I'm doing some one-off gigs this year - which is great fun. I really enjoyed the one I did just before Xmas.

We've been asked to do a 50th birthday party in the summer.  What would you recommend playing ? - good-time, fun, upbeat stuff - nothing outrageously complicated please!  Rock orientated possibly?  Basically, what do people enjoy hearing and bopping to in your experience that's also fun to play?

Many thanks.

I've been at parties where I've literally played 12 songs 3 times each, and at others where a hugely-varied and generally-successful setlist still bombs because it's just the wrong crowd.

Can you give us more to go on?

I will ask RocknRollDave, but I'd also like/need to work on stuff in the meantime.

Special Brew appeals - need to ensure I consume eight pints of the stuff to give it the authentic bounce....

  • I've always fancied doing something along these lines but with the full band, (not sure if this counts as one or like 4...but it's awesome anyways):

Cheers everyone. Sorry for that multiple post! Bit embarrassing - still getting to grips with my iPad.

Okay (what I know) - it'll be a fairly big bash, I think we'll be playing outside, most people there will be about 50.  The bloke whose party it is doodles on the guitar and will probably want to get on for a couple of numbers (rhythm only).

The other  band members who I got together with for the first time last week are all good (better than me) and could play mostly anything, particularly the other guitarist who's been playing for years in all kinds of guises.  They seemed to be more rock orientated than me in their tastes (Rush, Deep Purple), I'm more blues end of things.  Long Train Running is a good shout for me.

Does that help?  I don't know much more yet.

  • Ok, so unless you know otherwise, it is a fair assumption that, as it is a birthday party, there will be a mix of friends and family, and from that you can assume a fairly wide spread of ages and tastes.
best advice I can give is to remember that you are the party entertainment, so people want to dance, tap their feet, maybe sing along to songs they know. In other words, put your personal tastes on the back burner and play popular songs that will be well known and well respected. Google wedding/ function bands and get a look at a cross section of setlists...You will see a LOT of repetition between different bands, songs tha crop up a lot...There is a good reason for this, so borrow liberally from these setliststs! From that pool of songs, you can still pick the ones you, as a band, like the most and fancy playing most.
