So you got 5k to spend on a vintage...

What's Hot
What you going to do?

Purely as a potential future investment, being able to look at it and play it is a bonus, stocks & shares just aint doing it lately.

Birth year stuff is always nice, in my case 1965..

I like the idea of...

Gibson SG, 76 Explorer, some sort of tele...

If I had that much money, it would probably go on an '80's Charvel, which is utterly ridiculous, but then £5k on a guitar is kind of.

    5k...

2 minty 65 Twin Reverbs or one minty 57 Twin.

A Tele or 335 is never wrong and I'd guess they have the most buoyant secondhand market as they will always appeal to the grey pound.

Probably one of those lemon drop ones. But £5k sounds steep; weren't they £300ish new?

I'd buy a shitload of pedals rather than amps or guitars. Easier to store, more fun to play with, and I think you'd end up making more if you were buying as an investment if you bought the right things.

No interest in vintage or a guitar that isn't for playing.

you could buy as many as two second hand TES's.

Probably a PRS Custom 24 from the first year of production. I can see them doing well as an investment

2 x Gretsch Broadkaster drum kits and some Zildjian cymbals, all from the 1950's.

  • ES-175 and depending on how much change there is out of the £5k and what I might add to it, ES-330.

3x5 semi from birth year is possible. They will never go big money like a Lester but steady and sensible.

Not for me. The 335 started in 1959.

    Exactly.

Gibson made about as many Cherry 335s in my birth year ('64) as the did Les Pauls in '59 - so they are almost as rare - just no where near as desirable.

Once you get to '65 and beyond, they become something of a vintage bargain.

I bought mine in 2003 for little more than reissue money.

If I was going to spend that much on one guitar, maybe a Jimmy Page reissue LP? He is going to go the way of Bowie etc like the rest of us, and that might push the interest prices.

I'd go for it, if I found the right one!  But for me, it would be a 'player grade' one with original pickups, okay if it is a bit beaten up, but would have to be playable.  I'd be unlikely to get a mint one, as it would be too expensive, and I'd be scared to play it!

Could I get 1952 anything that was actually playable?
