  • If you put a fun to my head and forced me to spend £5k I'd probably end up with some kind of rickenbacker. Although a vintage gold top might be nice too.

  • Maybe a Modern Eagle 1?

Couldn't you just put the money towards a proper car? :-)

If I had that much money, it would probably go on an '80's Charvel, which is utterly ridiculous, but then £5k on a guitar is kind of.
I have one of those you can have for a wee bit less than that?

  • I really wouldn't want a 5k guitar, especially an electric, but acoustic, early Martin or 175 would be nice,.

If it was purely for toys, a yamaha first year mint R1 and a first year mint fireblade :)

  • Early 80's dot neck 335 reissue, and a 50's Les Paul Junior.

  • I'd buy none of it. I'd buy something new, bespoke and probably better built. I'd still be left with enough cash to take some fellow fretboarders to Las Vegas for a top weekend.

As if by magic a guitar has come onto my radar...

The seller isnt sure of its value, and I have an idea from Google research....more advice please.

Gibson ES355 TD Stereo with varitone and vibrato ( pics later) , its red / cherry with original case, and all in pretty good condition.

This is definitely available to me sub £1k, probably around £800, Im pretty sure its not a very early one, more likely late 60's maybe even very early 70's.

Value? ...I should be good at under £1k you think?

  • < £1k  = bargain, IMO, assuming it is what it claims to be
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

  • It sounds too good to be true - so my starting point would be that it is.

Just from the serial number you should be able to ascertain it's age - after that, a quick Google would give you an idea on price.

Given that the seller can do the same thing, I'm always skeptical about people 'not knowing what it's worth'.

I appreciate and fully understand the comments, and to be honest I do the know the seller via a friend of mine, it was her late husbands guitar and he got it in the 60's sometime together with a nice Vox which has since been sold ...Arrgghh !

I am getting the guitar soon to give it another once over, but Im quite sure its genuine, she is totally internet clueless.

Its a little complicated, and whilst the price is good, ( it was offered to me for £400 this morning ) my own morals say I need to give a " reasonable" price, the family have been through a lot over recent years and even £1k will make a difference.

Yeah Google suggests various costs, and i get that these are very much subject to the exact year in some cases.

We all love a bargain, but I need to get this right for various reasons...will post pics asap.

If morality is entering into it, my view is you have a duty to tell her what it's worth - if (say) a dealer were to take advantage of her ignorance, most on here would probably criticise them for it.

Not sure a private sale is any different in that respect.....

If £1000 would make a real difference, £3000 (for example) would make even more.

  • I'd keep saving. I'm still on the look out for an all original 1948  Les Paul!

  • I'd be buying the '76 Travis Bean that JohnnyPlectrum's selling on this very forum here.  I'd probably have to spend the remaining 1K on regular sessions with a chiropractor, but it'd be worth it.

I agree with this. At £1k you are probably robbing them.
