How many you have? I've become a bit obsessed lately, buying up loads I could't afford when younger. Up to 550 now I think. Wife thinks it's futile of course...

I reckon I've got somewhere around 600-650 (plus another 250 or so LPs) and 15 of them are R.E.M. - there are a few other artists that I might have more of (Elvis Costello for one) but it was the R.E.M. collection that first caught my eye.

    First up:

CD#1 Kris Delmhorst - Songs For A Hurricane

I found this artist via a friend's Myspace page, back when that was the No 1 place for me to find new music. Not listened to this one for years, which is a shame as she's got a great voice and I liked it a lot.

    CD# 2 The Unthanks - Here's The Tender Coming.

I really like the way their vocals intertwine, tonally and stylistically they're very distinct but complimentary. While I have other albums of theirs I think this is the only CD (the others will have to wait for Playing All My Downloaded Albums) - overall another enjoyable album.

CD #3 Lo-fi Lung - Heading for Those Trees/ Sit Down For A Day

Two four song EPs from a duo/band that were part of a gig I played (IIRC in Birmingham somewhere) great fun live, plus I got a packet of seeds which I still have somewhere.

    CD# 4 Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

There was a recent thread on a forum that asked for bands people would like if one thing was changed, and number of them included bands where they'd prefer a different singer, SP being one. For me the vocal is one of the stand out things about Smashing Pumpkins and they'd be less interesting without it.
Sadly I'm not in a position to listen to it at the optimum volume, some music is SO much better when it's rattling the windows :O)

I've got somewhere between 1500 and 2000 I think - haven't counted for ages. I have to keep them organised alphabetically on a bookcase so I can find anything, and carry a complete list on my phone so I don't accidentally buy things I've already got when I'm looking through second-hand and charity shops. It took ages to do but was worth it in the long run - although it still seems a bit OCD.

My wife doesn't approve either - she keeps asking why I need them all when I put them straight onto the computer. And what I'm going to do when I run out of space on my CD bookcase. (Buy another one! :) )

    I've got a fair few.

    I can't resist having a troll though CD's at boot sales/charity shops at 50p- £1 each.

Recently I've mostly picked up s/h ones from a little stall in Exmouth Indoor Market (190 miles from my house, but I visit my Dad every six weeks or so) 3 for £10, and occasionally from Amazon - it's because I've accumulated so many recently that I thought I ought to put them in a bit more order, and catch up with listening to them.

I could do with getting a dedicated CD player - I currently play them using the CD drive in my PC but after a few plays it starts making a ticking noise which is annoying.

I'm currently going through all of mine; if they're on Spotify then they go into a "to sell" box. 'Course, then I have to sell the buggers...

If I manage to listen to 4 CDs a day and spend at least 5 days a week listening I should manage them all in 32 weeks - though I might skip a few (while I like a lot of SRV I can only just about manage one CD before I get bored so they'll either get skipped or have to be well spread out).

I love the way their voices intertwine and this a pretty good album overall.

I've found it impossible to take the Unthanks seriously ever since a friend supported them and discovered their vegetarian-specific rider demanded that – and I quote – "cheese should not be the central pillar of the arrangements."

I must have way over 2,000 CDs, but I couldn't guess the actual number.

At least 10 years ago I built some floor-to-ceiling shelves along my hallway which fitted all the CDs and DVDs I had at the time, so they're still in A-Z order (the CDs that is, the DVDs were never in order).  Everything I've bought since is just scattered around the place in piles, anywhere there's a flat surface.  I'll never have time to sort them out unless I win the lottery and give up work.

But anyway, @Paul_C, are you going to review them all one by one?  This will turn into an epic thread.

    I'm ahead of you :)

I already decided that updating this every day might get annoying so I've just started a blog to document the progress (or lack of) and keep out of the way of everyone who might have got sick and tired of this pretty quickly.

I've had to discipline myself to sort the new arrivals into order every few weeks when the 'new' pile builds up enough, or I'll never do it.

It's not actually that much work, you just need to set aside about half an hour and start at one end, moving them along as necessary.

Time for one more before bed:

CD#5 Jonatha Brooke - The Works

Another artist found via Steve Lawson (and not the last) this is a collection of songs with lyrics chosen from the huge archive of Woody Guthrie lyrics. For her part Jonatha does a great job and is accompanied by some great musicians including Joe Sample and Steve Gadd.

I'm with them in that  :) I saw them at a folk festival and enjoyed them and I like that thing with the brass band about the pigeons but they're a bit hard work after a song or two.

    Good luck.

Anyone who knows me will know that I'm a bit anal about "pure" alphabetical order, A-Z, and also by artist's last name if they use their name.

I really find it annoying that iTunes and Discogs both order by first name instead. So I decided to just get over myself finally and put all of my CD collection into alphabetical order by first name.

It looks really different now, when you look at the CD cases' spines... The "J" section of my collection expanded very suddenly. Now having all of the Joes together (Joe Satriani, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Perry) and the Johns (Mayer, Butler etc) all in one place.

Maybe it'll inspire me to pick up some CDs that I haven't touched in a while. :)
