"Bro Metal"

I came across this description on TGP, and I have absolutely no idea what it means.  Does anyone know much about this sub genre aside from the brief description on Urban Dictionary?

The urban dictionary description is pretty much all I know of it also. I heard the term Bro-Metal only a few weeks ago. The me, the sort of crap that people like Andrew W.K come out with sum up the genre.

Complete bullshit metal like Fiver Finger Deathpunch or Disturbed - the kind of stuff you hear for wrestling intros or Call of Duty background music

Godsmack have some real clunkers but they have some good tunes too:

I'm struggling with this being 16 years old though.

  • Cringe Metal would be more appropriate.

My impression of Godsmack has always been that they were an Alice in Chains rip-off, but aimed at thick people.

But that could be unfair, I've hardly ever listened to them.

They certainly have their moments of greatness but there are a few cringe-worthy moments as well but most bands of this type (Static X, Adema, Sevendust, Drowning Pool, Finger Eleven) are somewhat limited by the genre.
When you base your music around killer riffs and antagonistic lyrics it is going to be hard to break from that.

I find Godsmack frequently lacking in the lyric department- it is pretty one dimensional, but that is something I'd throw at all of the bands above as well.
There aren't many metal bands that have great lyrics for me though- Tool (and APC) at at the top of the list, along with SOAD, BTBAM and Protest The Hero.
Plus Porcupine Tree, but they aren't really a metal band.

I think Tesseract and Skyharbor have great lyrics, but different type of metal really.

One band that I am absolutely loving at the moment is Shinedown.
Every song on the album is a potential single.
Again, not the deepest of lyrics.

    Yeah pretty different.
Same with BTBAM- they aren't a typical metal band.

Godsmack vocalist is pretty good, but everything else about the band ranges from average to outright cockhat. Their lyrics and subject matter are fucking bush league.

I've never actually heard the term 'bro metal' until now...and I thought I had my finger on the pulse.

Best artist in this thread is Andrew WK.

    Clutch have great lyrics.

Again debatable whether or not they are a metal band, except in a very broad sense.  And I know @Drew_fx isn't a fan.  I'm pretty sure they're not Bro Metal.

I agree- but Clutch are more of a rock band, rather than a metal band, to my thinking.
I reckon Neil Fallon is the best lyricist in rock, along with Steven Wilson.
