Ok I'm gonna be honest it's only been plugged in for 15 min but it took a minute to find a sound I liked.

10 minutes of playing to make me wonder why I keep going round the houses with amps when Marshalls feel like home.

  • How does the Helix compare?

  • If you've purchased a quality amp like this and by the weekend you still haven't given it a good going over then you don't deserve to own it

Should be ashamed of yourself really. The amp version of a prick tease ;)

This is the joys of working 6 day weeks.

Id rather be at home with a beer and guitar.

Right so a few hours with her tonight and here's a brief overview of my thoughts.

    Start with the negatives.

Clean Channel, it sounds fine decent chime to it  and not ice picky like I tend to find a lot of cleans, it also reacts well to my picking and it plays nice with my drive pedals.

Now that doesn't sound particularly negative but when you change channels there is a significant volume jump to where I have the lead channel set.

This makes the clean channel unusable without constant changes.

So I've settled on the clean channel being permanently on the clipped setting, this adds a fair bit more drive to it but switching to neck pickup and rolling off the volume does give a nice warm clean that's goes dirty with a bit of digging in.

    Positives.

Its surprisingly light, feels solid and sturdy.

    Looks lovely aswell.

Lead channel - this is where I've been spending most of time, I don't use loads of gain I tend to sit between 9 and 1pm treble around 11pm, bass 10pm and mids around 1pm.

Ive been happily playing AC/DC, GnR and with my Archer in front gain up a bit and some fiddling with the EQ I've been able to get a pretty decent thrash metal sound out of it.

The presence control has been more than able to keep the fizzyness and harshness in check when the gains be pushed up.

Ive been running the amp through my Victory 2x12 with G12M-65's and my Zilla FatBaby 1x12 with a G12H-75.

Now the big question is will I keep it as I can't stop looking at Friedmans.

  • What's the "grace period"?
I forget but did you try these amps in the shop?

    14 days.

Id tried the Jubilee in PMT while waiting for my mate, that's what made me start thinking about one over the expense of the Friedman.

  • AH ok.
I honestly wasn't wowed by the mini Dirty Shirley I tried. Try whatever one you're thinking about if you can.
