When I used to use FB, I remember seeing photos of people on various trips and in palces. things like - "here's a seflie of me in the first class lounge at the airport, drinking champagne" blah blah. Here's me in NYC drinking cocktails, eating (insert whatever) etc etc. I just thought, I don't give a monkeys you braggart.

The only people who I want to tell what I'm upto, regularly, are my family and close friends. I'm really not that important to most people.
I think you're probably just being a miserable old cunt ;)

Thing is I actually like to see my mates off on their holidays, at the Statue of Liberty, what they're eating in a restaurant etc, I don't see them posting that shit as bragging or showing off, there's usually an element of "I'm on holiday, you're in work you knob" to it, but that's what people are like in real life (I certainly am) so why not online?

Your problem is that you have/had cunts on your FB that you don't give a shit about, why not just have a FB with your family and close friends and then all you'd see is their lives and vice versa.
because I can find out what they are doing when I talk to them! Cos I talk to/see my mates and family a lot. I don't need to see it through some godawful social media profile, that lodr knows whoever else has views of.

I suppose it just isn't for me. I don't need it to bolster up or replace my interactions with family. In fact, it would probably reduce the amount of time I spend talking to or seeing people. That's sort of what I am getting at: I think social media replaces physical interaction probably more than we realise. Not for everyone, but possibly for a lot.

I dont use FB, not for a long time. But what I found was that plenty of people I thought were sound, were posting loads of shite.

But then, maybe it wasn't shite! Maybe I AM a miserable get who isn't interested in anyone.....(for the record, I'm not, pmsl)
If it's not for you then it's not for you, which is fair enough, we've done this in another thread, but I'll repeat, it's you that's using it incorrectly, rather than it being what you wrote in bold (not sure the relevance or problem with lord knows how many people have viewed either).

You complaining about FB sounds like somebody from the '20's bitching about a telephone and how they don't need or want one as they write letters to their friends and family and see them often.

Yeah you can see them all the fucking time, but they're not going to bore you with holiday snaps or night out photo's, but if you're interested you can pop onto their wall and take a peek, I'm not sure what the issue is with it?

Saying that having FB would probably reduce the amount of time you spend interacting with family, again is your issue, not FB's issue.

All your issues in fact are issues that you're making either through your own making or through the people that you know.

If your FB experience is shit, you either know shit people or you've not set it up to how you want to use it.

It's a communication device, nothing more.

*I'd like to point out that I don't work for or have shares in FB.

people viewing it  - I meant "them" in that there cloud at Facebook towers, and all the other "thems" that they sell your info to without telling you.

I guess its one of those things - it works for lots of people, it doesn't for others. To be clear though, I'm not slating any social media platforms, but I don't like how it gets used

  • It has been said before but I don't think it has been completely taken on board:

Social media has not replaced face-to-face socialising.

Perhaps it has eroded it a little bit, but it has also added a whole new method of social interaction. A 10% reduction in socialising-type-A in order to create an equivalent socialising-type-B results in a total social increase of 80%.

I know that some people think that a friend who is not a take-a-bullet-chat-every-day friend is not worth having, and I can see why people like that wouldn't like social media, but I personally value all my friends (not equally...a doughnut is not worth a castle but I still like doughnuts) and I wouldn't have many of the peripheral ones if not for social media.

  • Selfies are a diary of some sorts I guess; you can look back on certain points in your life with the aid of a visual copy. Plus it's cool to take pictures at landmarks etc.

A couple of people I know on FB are vain though. You'll find selfies are pretty much all they have. So yeah there's vanity too.
