You complaining about FB sounds like somebody from the '20's bitching about a telephone and how they don't need or want one as they write letters to their friends and family and see them often.
Yeah you can see them all the fucking time, but they're not going to bore you with holiday snaps or night out photo's, but if you're interested you can pop onto their wall and take a peek, I'm not sure what the issue is with it?
Saying that having FB would probably reduce the amount of time you spend interacting with family, again is your issue, not FB's issue.
All your issues in fact are issues that you're making either through your own making or through the people that you know.
If your FB experience is shit, you either know shit people or you've not set it up to how you want to use it.
It's a communication device, nothing more.
*I'd like to point out that I don't work for or have shares in FB.

I guess its one of those things - it works for lots of people, it doesn't for others. To be clear though, I'm not slating any social media platforms, but I don't like how it gets used
It has been said before but I don't think it has been completely taken on board:
Social media has not replaced face-to-face socialising.
Perhaps it has eroded it a little bit, but it has also added a whole new method of social interaction. A 10% reduction in socialising-type-A in order to create an equivalent socialising-type-B results in a total social increase of 80%.
I know that some people think that a friend who is not a take-a-bullet-chat-every-day friend is not worth having, and I can see why people like that wouldn't like social media, but I personally value all my friends (not equally...a doughnut is not worth a castle but I still like doughnuts) and I wouldn't have many of the peripheral ones if not for social media.
A couple of people I know on FB are vain though. You'll find selfies are pretty much all they have. So yeah there's vanity too.
