Suggestions welcome.

A micro SD slot is essential.

I was thinking Moto G4 Plus?

I have a Moto G4, it's excellent, sensitive to weak signals (iPhones and Galaxies don't work at all in my house) and battery life is immense, even though I have the large screen model.

Battery life is quite important. I don't need to play fancy games on it. I will be using Spotify a lot, hence the SD card slot to save as much locally as possible.

    Also an absence of bloatware.

It sounds like the G4 Plus may well be the feller for the job.

have you looked at 2nd hand ones? I recently bought a Samsung S5 for myself for a 2-figure sum, and a little later an S3 for my wife, for half that. Both had been extremely well looked after by previous owners, came reset to zero with no stuff on them and work flawlessly. Seems like a lot of people just switch to the newest model once their provider lets them or the fancy takes them and stuff the old one in a drawer.

    Both have SD card slots.

  • I'm also considering a Moto G4 Plus and am comparing it against the OnePlus 3 and the LG G5.
I currently use a Moto 4G (the 4G version of the 1st version). It's been brilliant and only a couple of things have let it down after 2 years of excellent performance.

  • They're not as popular as they used to be, but I've owned two of the Sony Xperia phones (first the SP and now the Z3 Compact) and both have been brilliant. Easy to use, built like bricks and brilliant battery life on both.

Galaxy S7. Loving mine. No nonsense and the battery lasts more than a day with normal use. Fast charging is a big help too.

I should clarify; by 'sensible' I meant 'sensibly priced', so no £400 uber-flagships. ;)

I've got a Sony Xperia Z1 compact. It is magnificent, except for a couple of things:
    1) The battery isn't user-replaceable
    2) The cover for the USB socket was designed by a team of idiots - one idiot on his/her own wouldn't have the requisite stupidity to come up with the design they've used.

I've got a 64GB card in there - and to be honest if youy want to swap cards then the design is again a bit iffy.

Samsung Galaxy A3 - slim, lightweight, 4G, £150-ish, card slot.  And it's gold.

Don't laugh but I have a Bush 5 inch screen jobbie from argos, micro SD, takes 2 sim cards on any network, had it over a year now with no issues, only 3G though. i think they are about £50.
