I use Spotify a lot in the car so the Premium features are a benefit.

  • It's mostly just the summary of their stuff through Spotify - I'll be listening to more soon!

Thanks to everyone but @thomasross20  for their advice. I've checked out anydecentmusic.com and it's rather good.

I'm a Tidal user as opposed to Spotify, as I like the Hi-Fi service.

Spotify is ok if you are using plastic computer speakers or earbuds from your phone. It is low res music, even the paid up version is no better. Fine for what it is but to listen to the music and to understand what the band/music is all about you need the CD or a subscription to Tidal.

Au contraire, I had a copy of In The Heart Of The Young when it was released. Reb Beach is an amazing guitarist!

But, get off my thread ;-)

Maybe we need a Winger thread.  But I can't be arsed to start one.

Google Play Music - pretty much the same thing as Spotify. Usually check the "similar artists" list that comes up

  • Band practice, it's a lot of effort finding it though, sometime it takes hours of pursuit through cliched jams to finally observe the elusive new music in its natural environment.

Agree - and it was another thread here that turned me on to them.
    Red ones are better.

I use Spotify all the time but still haven't taken the plunge on the paid version - there doesn't seem to be much benefit apart from losing the adverts.
far more money goes  to the artists. not enough though
there are other technical improvements, read their site

I listen to Marc Riley on Radio 6.
Also Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone and Freakier Zone has unearthed stuff for me over the years (Goat, Black Angels, Hookworms amongst others more esoteric)

    KEXP sessions on youtube
Definitely - as well as some cracking live sessions of bands you might know and love

I also like to trawl some of the blogs that post music, some of it old, some of it new, lot's of it shite, but that's life :) Unfortunately, there are issues of legality...

I bloody hate 6 Music, someone I work with insists on having it on loud every time he's in (it's on right now actually) and there's so, so much shit on it with the odd good tune. Maybe its just not my type of music though - too much weird and off the wall sounding stuff (but not in a good way) for me. Dislike the presenters as well. I appreciate I may not fit the demographic which seems to be middle aged dad rockers trying to still be "with it".

Best I have found is the subreddit called ListenToThis. I've discovered loads of good stuff that way. And bandcamp.

  • KEXP sessions are excellent.

But youtube in general is pretty good for new music - I can often find new stuff through the linked videos.

Spotify goes up to 320kbps, which is not "low res". Tidal goes further at its highest rate (it does 96/320/1411), but I'd happily bet 50p and a chunky kitkat that you couldn't tell 320 from 1411 in a blind test.

Ahh I thought his reviews were like comedy reviews.  Never knew he was being serious.
