Ginger Geezer: The Life of Vivian Stanshall

Hardly got into it but looking forward to a story about a true British eccentric
I've got that on my kindle. I think I've started it twice but never got further than 30 or 40 pages. Be interested to see what you make of it. Viv was an amazing character, it should be a great read.

  • Just finished Darktown by a guy called Thomas Mullen. It's about the first black police force set up in Atlanta in the late '40s. Worked brilliantly as a gripping crime/detective procedural, but with the added layer of depth that all the racial/social/political issues brought to the table. Highly recommended for any crime fiction fans.

Thought as I was reading it that it would make a cracking film or 6 episode TV series, and just googled and found out that apparently Jamie Foxx's production company have bought the rights to make a TV show, so hopefully that comes to fruition in the next couple of years!

Wise Words & Country House Ways - Ruth Binney. A detailed look at "big houses", how they evolved into what they are now. Analysis of how the house was run, the staff hierarchy, guests visiting etc etc.

Very interesting subject but this book skimps a bit on detail and content. Many years ago I read a book called 'Not in front of the Servants', which was a study of life below stairs in big houses. NIFOTS went into far greater detail about things like the servants duties and what was expected from them and was a better read.

Still if if you have not read any books on this subject, Wise Words & Country House Ways is a good introduction to a way of life that has gone for good. At least you will understand the going ons in Downton Abbey a bit better...

I`ll let you know in about 3 years when I`ve finished it!

It was recommended by a guy at work and the tale of him living on a half sunken barge in Kingston sold it to me.

Just about to start on this:

It does seem quite brief. Varoufakis is usually quite convincing.

I like how, when my edition was published, 1984 was still set in the future...
Just a random thing I like about the read.

Re-reading two of my favourite books, both true stories:
Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam (I just found out it was made into a movie "October Sky")
    and
the Newtonian Casino by Thomas A Bass.  I've had that for about 30 years, yellow pages.
Both inspiring true stories of young people doing sciencey things.  Must say something about me!

Uncommon People: The Rise and Fall of the Rock Stars by David Hepworth. Observations on, and analysis of, the nature of rock stardom. Engaging, easy to read, and fascinating. Would recommend.

Now We Are Dead by Stuart McBride.

A Spin off from the Logan McRae novels,it gives McRae's boss Roberta Steel top billing and it's all the better for it.A total romp and and absolute blast from start to finish and laugh out loud funny.

    Highly recommended.

Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens.

It's one of the few Dickens books which I've never seen adapted for film or TV and I had no prior knowledge of the plot.  Really enjoying it, I love his characters and the humour in his writing.

@breakstuff ;I got that the day it came out. A really good read. Thought it was way better than the last Logan McCrae book, although some of it was a bit too far fetched for the sake of comedic value (the cop losing his clothes in the school for instance). Made Roberta into a much more solid character though, instead of just a chain-smoking letch and I hope he does more books around her.

Don’t know if you’ve seen but the new LM book is due out mid June and apparently he’s joining Professional Standards!!
