I have never put one up (not being Christian an' all) but my wife is Russian and she has a tradition of a "New Year's Tree) same shit, different tradition, so now we do. No tossing presents though and no fairy or star.

I know.  I am thoroughly ashamed of myself.   I even broke my rule about never buying a new tree at full price.  My old one was 10 years old and cost a fiver

And I agree totally, the whole celebration has Pagan roots. As does Easter, Passover, New Year, etc etc...

I would rather consider myself Pagan than Christian.

my parents were raised as JW's, left before I was born.  I would say I was raised free of religion, albeit within a Christian society.  

However, Having grown up without xmas and birthday celebrations, my parents kinda made a big deal out of them.

TBH, we have the room to have a big tree in our living room, usually 3-4 metres.  We have a fresh cut tree from a local sustainable source, enjoy it for a few weeks and then burn it (outside!) on or just after twelfth night. With a good drink to toast the end of the festive season.

But it doesn't come into the house until at least the second week of December.

That makes sense with a live tree.

When my ex-missus moved in she brought a tree with her (big fake thing with built-in lights (the tree, not the missus)) and I gave my tree to my daughter as she didn't have one.

Now the ex-missus (and tree) has gone I don't have one, I doubt I shall bother to buy one so that might be it for me and trees.

yowsers that is early...  I will dig mine up about the 19th leave it out for the roots to dry a bit, pot it and bring it in 23rd/24th and it will go back into the ground on the 27th.

I'm gonna wait for my next door neighbour to put theirs up...and then go and sit next to it for 10 minutes a day 'til xmas day. Just think of all the fuckin about I've saved meself.

Neighbours put outside lights up at the weekend.

So we're moving now.  Can't live next-door to people like that.

Tree & decs go up on the 18th.  Come down on NYD, generally with the recording of Jools' Hootenanny playing loud and a fair hairs of a few dogs to help the process.
