Because the seller wanted a cash on collection deal.
I do this with guitars as well- I never need a sale so urgently that I am willing to risk chargebacks.
I actually avoid eBay altogether as a seller now- gumtree, cash on collection is the only way I do it unless it is here.

Eh? In this case, the seller isn't getting cash. The seller's getting paid via PayPal, and hoping that this charade doesn't result in a chargeback.

Craziness, maybe I'm missing a trick but surely a town (and county) with such a large Russian community it would be exactly the same as the ex-pat Brit community on the costa-del-sol, a network of social media and back home links that can solve any situation?

Sorry I am being sarcastic, I have friends in the local Russian and Ukrainian community in Northamptonshire; they have their own version of fb, they link in willingly and easily look out for each other -there is far more community than we have had in the U.K. for a while.

Dude refund that that money and extricate yourself.

All I've done is put it in a box and stuck some tape round it.

Update: Whilst I haven't had a visit from any Russian gangsters (or Special Branch) the box is still here as the buyer hasn't found a courier whose price he's prepared to pay as yet.

You should get in touch with him about a storage charge. A few weeks over Xmas might be acceptable but long term you don't want someone else's property in the house do you...
